I need a NW HOG Hunt!!!
« on: May 19, 2010, 01:53:00 PM »
Anyone know any Pacific Northwest states that have a lot of hogs that need "harvesting"?  I am in Washington and would like to be able to make it a long weekend kind of event and not a week long trip.

Not unless you go too a hog farm.

I did run into a bunch of them in the woods once up by Loomis though.  They'd broke out of their pen.

I thought I was trailing deer and was real surprised.

Not as surprised as the farmer would be if you got a couple.
I have "heard" there are some in Northern Oregon and even in Idaho.  Can anyone confirm this?

No hogs in northern Oregon or many in Idaho that I have found any info on after two years of hard research.  A few do exist in southern and central Oregon.  Mainly on private property.  The few truly wild pigs in southern Oregon are bleed overs from Northern California hogs.  I have searched and called ODFW, along with everyone else that might have info and they are not readily available to hunt in any kind of numbers in Oregon.  A few of the contacts got really squirrely when I asked the questions so I know they are on some shootable populations and not wanting to share.  I am working to put together a few guys to head to southern Oregon for camping / scouting trips.  The plan is to scout north south drainages that are likely to hold some hogs.  It make take a series of trips to find them.  They do exist in Oregon, just not in huge numbers.  If your interested lets chat.  Those are the closest hogs on public property that I have found to hunt.  They exist along the coast range and on into the interior on Oregon's southern border.  Just for reference this info is going to be kept close to the chest for those who spend the time and money it takes to find them.  If a guy wants to share it with the world they are welcome to, but they can do their own scouting on their dime and time.

Rumor has it there are a few in Washington on the Olympic Peninsula. I talked with a few people that said they have seen them and hit one with a car. I went over and hunted a couple days for them. Never saw any but did find some tracks, scat and a bunch of area they had rooted up.

Clay, I will hit you up at the Western State Trad (you will be there won't you?).  While I don't have a lot of vacation time (reads zero this week) odds are if we see them we can shoot them because most places don't have a season (I was planning on getting an Oregon Licence anyway).
Jesse, I have been over much of the Oly Penn and those are just stories told around the camp fires.  I have talked to folks (including the biologists for the Dept. Fish and Game) and no one has seen anything.  As much as I wish it were true. It's possible that some domestic pigs got loose and rooted for a bit until something or someone got them.

Michael,

I will be at the WST. I will be camping in the vendors area.  I am bringing a bunch of tomahawks and knives along for sale.  I plan to be up there Thursday morning.  The Oly. peninsula pig herd was real and is not a rumor.  There were a moderate number of pigs that were illegally released up there and the indians and WSFW put the hurt on them and eliminated them.  Down lower a few domestics got out and then the population grew.  Those two herds were hunted / trapped into extinction as well. They were in the Wynoochie Valley area.  WDFW is death on wild hogs and punished the appropriate parties that let the illegal hogs go. I heard the fines were not pretty.  I checked with the invasives specialist with WDFW to verify the above info.

Oregon has an open season on wild hogs.  No tags, no limits.  You just need a hunting license and it is hog killing time. So once you have the hunting license and see one they want it dead.  ODFW is asking that any wild hog sightings or kills be reported to their invasives species specialist.

Michael,
I too talked to WDFW and was told there were hogs there. I guess it just depends on who you get on the other end of the phone. Good luck finding a good place with some hogs! I would love to find a place also!

I will let you know if I see anything because I plan on spending most weekends of Aug - Sept in the Wynoochie Valley... From what Clay said they have been killed off.  I saw news articles about them from years ago, maybe some survived and procreated.  I can dream :-)

I had never heard of any hogs being in Oregon or Washington, this is interesting what all of you have said.
