Ed Holcom replica bows?
« on: May 19, 2010, 06:54:00 PM »
Over the weekend I attended the Baltimore Bowman  traditonal shoot. Bowyer Ed Holcom was there with some of his bows. They were very nice Bear reproductions. Has anyone owned or shot one of these bows? If so what did you think of them.

Thanks
Gil

All I know is they were FREAKIN beeeuuteefull... The only reason I do not have one know is he only puts the high gloss finish on them. Nice bows. RP  :notworthy:

I've got two of Ed's bows. Fit and finish are 2nd to none plus both are smooth and fast. Ed is a great guy to do business with too.

I've owned several,  a '57, an original design '59, and a third that was basically a '59 Kodiak Special repro but had a modified grip.  All very good bows w/ excellent craftsmanship and a deep, glossy finish. They don't come up on the used market very often but are usually priced very reasonably, all of mine were great buys for the $$ I paid.  Can't go wrong with one.

I had a 1957 Kodiak reproduction done by Ed, an excellent bow and I wish I still had it.

Here's a pic of the most recent own I've owned, sold it this past winter. Wenge / purple heart w/ white glass veneer limbs. They shoot very well. Too shiny / glossy to drag through the mountains hunting but that's subjective I guess.

I  have heard a couple of comments about a bow being to shiney to hunt with, all it takes is a good coat of past wax or a coat of string wax and you will not hurt the finish or have any problem with the bow while hunting  :campfire:

Very true or you could use the limb-skins. But a deep, polished gloss finish that you rake against the scrub oaks is marred for good, very hard to rub out whereas a satin to medium gloss finish is easy to fix and won't show the beating as much to begin with.

I had a '57 Kodiak of his that was as good a shooter as any I've owned.  It is one I regret letting go.  It would scorch an arrow. Superbly built also.

That has to be one of the nicest looking '57 replicas I've seen!  Does anyone know if he makes a 64" '57 replica?

Gil-
Migrabill here. The guy that got your green stripe! It was nice to see you at Baltimore. I am sorry we did not get to talk longer.
Anyhow that bow that myshootinstinks threw up in that pic is my bow. I got it from him.
The bow shoots as good as it looks. He told me at BMore that he has gotten away from the pistol grip as alot of people did not care for it. Guess I'm in the minority. Makes me feel like I got a Colt 1911 in the hand. I love the grip.

Yep, That bow I sold to Migra Bill is my favorite of the Holcombs I've owned...excellent shooter.  I have had some regret selling it and I knew I would.

I've got a Holcomb Drake bow. The grip is super comfortable and it really zips out an arrow.
