Lithium batteries --- Person at REI told me to put them in something else for 5 or 10 minutes to "burn off" the initial spike and then they should work. Also some have gotten lines on the screen from lithiums but they go away..according to the rep.

I'm pretty sure mine is the same model...also a $400 purchase.

I learned the hard way when you replace batteries, you have to "re-orient" the compass.

Screwy results if you don't...

Been there, done that...

I hunt in bear country and one evening I'm about 2 miles back, up in my treestand, it's getting dark and I hear a big bear, not too far off in the distance, having a very bad day    . No worries as I have my trusty GPS to get me back to the main trail. Forgot to recalibrate the compass after a battery change. Next thing you know, it's pitch dark (like you can't see your hand in front of your face dark...) and the GPS reassure's me I'm back on the main trail. I'm still deep in the woods. I knew of a stream that ran on the far side of the trail so I just told the GPS take me to the stream and it brought me out on the trail, much futher up the trail then I ever thought but back on the trail never the less.

Moral of the story, recalibrate your GPS compass every time you replace the batteries.

I've had mine two years and use it alot and haven't replaced the batteries yet. You guys must leave them on in your backpacks!

I recalibrate mine everytime I go off somewhere. Even between Georgia and Florida it is more accurate when you recalibrate

Just saw several comments on the "Lithium Effect".  I addressed that issue a page or two back.  I only use the AA lithiums.

I use a 1gig which allows me to have all the road maps for entire east coast from Florida to Maine and the topo maps I want.

It  allows me to  use unit as a mass storage device to store My Map folders

I ordered the bundled package today from the Cabelas' Bargain Cave.  The online ship date was pushed out to 8 - 9 weeks.  No issues in the summer.  I need to use it some before the season.  What in your experience has been the learning curve?  I have an Etrex and have used it for years. Any similarities to the Etrex?

Looks like a great deal.

All I've ever used is a USGS map or trailhead area map and compass
Can USGS 7.5' 1:24 topo's download to Garmin's, i.e. 'mapsource' or does Garmin use a version of their own mapping software? If Garmin is priority designed whats the side by side comparision?
I have never used a GPS and know notta'zip about them. Considering the price and owner comments I ordered one

I bought one last week and got the 1:24 topo for Colorado and Utah.  I have only messed with it around the house so far but the topo looks really good.  Jim

Go to huntinggpsmaps.com to look at what they have for downloads on mapping.  Pretty cool.
