I learned the hard way when you replace batteries, you have to "re-orient" the compass.
Screwy results if you don't...
Been there, done that...
I hunt in bear country and one evening I'm about 2 miles back, up in my treestand, it's getting dark and I hear a big bear, not too far off in the distance, having a very bad day  . No worries as I have my trusty GPS to get me back to the main trail. Forgot to recalibrate the compass after a battery change. Next thing you know, it's pitch dark (like you can't see your hand in front of your face dark...) and the GPS reassure's me I'm back on the main trail. I'm still deep in the woods. I knew of a stream that ran on the far side of the trail so I just told the GPS take me to the stream and it brought me out on the trail, much futher up the trail then I ever thought but back on the trail never the less.
Moral of the story, recalibrate your GPS compass every time you replace the batteries.
