My new Firefly Bow (MORE PICS on PG 2)
« on: May 24, 2010, 05:21:00 PM »
I do not know what to say about this bow. My mom used to tell me if I didn't have anything nice to say I should say nothing at all ... she forgot to instruct me on what to do when I had everything nice to say!!!
First off, I want to say Jim Jones is a gem of a guy who was a real pleasure to deal with. Secondly, he finished my bow ahead of schedule and the end product met or exceeded all of my expectations!!!
The pictures I took really do not do this bow justice. On the other hand, as nice as it looks, it shoots even better. The riser woods are Maccasar Ebony and Yellowheart. The limb veneers are Waterfall Bubinga with Cocobolo caps and limb tips.
This is the quietest bow I have ever had and it only has a real small set of catwhiskers installed. My shoulder has been bothering me and I have been struggling to shoot my recurve which is around 60lbs at 29". This bow is 62lbs at 29" and is smooth as butter and a pleasure to shoot.
It took me about two volleys of arrows to adjust to the bow and then it shot exactly where I was looking. I had been having a hard time grouping with my recurve past 20 yds (due to lack of practice from the sore shoulder) anyway I was shooting really good groups almost immediately at 25 to 30 yds+ with this bow. The 1st group I shot with my 170 grain Zwickeys installed at 25 yds was a little bigger than a cantelope. I chronoed the bow and it was just as fast as my custom recurves. I have only had the bow a week but there is no doubt that this is going to be my goto bow for my 1st bear hunt which starts on June 6th.
I wanted to make sure to give Jim all the credit he deserves but enough talk ... here are the pictures!!!

The thumb rest Jim installed was something I requested and he did a vey nice job on that. I forgot to mention that in my original post. I know many of you have Fireflys and would probably notice it was not a standard feature. Somehow I forget to transfer all of my pictures to Photobucket so I may add one or two more later.

Welcome to the brotherhood my friend.  Jim is every bit the person you talk about.  I would say your momma taught you well in giving praise.  That bow is stunning!  I have one that is macassar and tulipwood in the riser.  I have three of his bows and they are all you say they are.  Good luck with the Bear hunt cause one of them is in big trouble!

The yellowheart is really a beautiful contrast to the ebony.  I like it a bunch.  How long is the bow?

Beautiful mate. You are right they are a very quiet bow. I only have two very small natural wool silinces on mine and it's almost dead silent.

Nice!  How about some pic's of those limb veneers?  The thumb rest is a nice touch.

I got my new 62"Firefly a little while ago.  It is a tack driver that is for sure, and everything you say about Jim and his work is right on.  I got Makassar and cocobolo in my riser.  Really added some mass and stability.  I have a very different look to my Makassar.  Jim did a great job picking the wood pieces for both bows that is for sure because both Makassar pieces really  complement the second wood in the riser.
