Tell me about 3d shoots.
« on: May 25, 2010, 10:46:00 PM »
I'm thinking about going to the Hickory, NC shoot this weekend and was wondering about the 3d shoot they have.  I've never participated in one, so I have no idea what to expect.

What are the typical yardages?  I stump shoot every day and take some long shots every now and then (75 yards or so), but most of my shooting is at 40 yards and less.

Should I plan on taking a dozen arrows?  Do most people lose arrows during a shoot?

Do you have a chance to practice or walk the course first to get an idea of what it is like?

How long does it take, typically? I realize it would vary depending on the number of participants, but what would be an average? 1 hour, 3 hours?

Do you only take one shot per target?

I know can just show up and find out, but I'm really curious and excited to go.

most of the 30 target 3D shoots I go to have about 25 to 30 yards for the longer shots but most are under 25 yards.Usually about 2 hours. And I like to have at least 5 arrows with me.They are alot of fun you will enjoy yourself.

Why would I have to be a helluva shot to shoot at 75 yards?  I didn't say I nail my target every time. The vast majority of the time I shoot at 40 yards and under.  My hunting shots are usually under 25 yards.

Anyway...

Most of the 3D shoots I go to is 15-30 yards with a few longer ones. Some shoots have bonus shots that are a steel animal with the kill cut out those are fun but dangerous to arrows, most shoot are 30 to 40 targets generally being scored 5,8,10,11. I highly recommend you go they are very addicting to me, I look forward to every weekend to go to one around here you'll meet some great people and have a blast.

Can't argue w/ a fella that can shoot a traditional bow consistently at 40-75 yards.  WOW!
If it is a traditional shoot, most targets will be under 20yds and the long ones between 25-30. Usually only one arrow per target.  No club likes to have their targets shot up any sooner than necessary.
You will shoot from a given stake or ribbon. If you make a poor shot, leave your bow leaning on the target if you are alone.  Looking in the woods for an arrow immediately behind the target while other shooters are approaching can be very dangerous. They need to know you are back there.  Make sure the shooters ahead of you are fully cleared before approaching the shooting stake. Be polite. Don't hold people up and let faster shooters shoot through.
Remember it is all in fun.  If it wasn't fun we probably would be doing something else.

Most shots will be 20-25 yds a few longer and a few shorter. One shot per target. The Hickory shoot is a good one. Will be some vendors there so plan on some time to look around. Food is available there also.. As far as time I never paid any attention but probably around 4-5 hrs to shoot. Half dozen arrows should be plenty, if you loose those you would probably be ready to stop shooting anyway.
