Who shoots purple heart shafts?
« on: May 04, 2007, 03:38:00 PM »
I've made up a few purple heart shafts but @ 11/32's, they are all spined out right at 90-100'lbs.  At that rate, by the time I put a head on them heavy enough to soften the spin they're gonna wind up around 900 grains for so.  I could make them at 5/16's but that would require another $100 or so to change it.

Just wanting to compare notes with those who've used them.

(I suppose I could just use them for fish arrows...)

I have used them, but they are very heavy, hard to straighten and hard to keep straight. I like the heavy, but did not like having to straighten them all the time. Do not use them anymore. I stick with lam birch and my stash of Alaskan Forgewoods.

Yeah, I havn't tried straightening them but assumed it would take a lot of heat.  I only made up a dozen or so to try.

I use purple heart for my bear hunting arrows. I straighten them with heat and they stay straight. I had they same problem Danny had til I started using heat. You need to be careful of grain runout, it is hard to see. I have broken a few trying to straighten them before I started using heat.

I got some from The Footed Shaft which are 23/64 compressed to 11/32 footed on the front with Purple Heart and tapered in the rear.  They are really impressive.  I bet they'd foot those onto some shafts for you.
