Feather complaints?
« on: June 11, 2010, 10:36:00 AM »
As most of you have a favorite feather, will not mention brands, but when using pre-cut feathers, or full lenght from manufacutres, what is your biggest complaint?  Are the bases to thick?  Are the bases to wide?  Etc?  What I am asking and seeking is how to grind feather that would be of the best interest to all

bases too thick would be my biggest gripe. It makes it hard to get the feather to lay flat on the shaft, and look neat on the finished arrow.

Depending upon the manufacturer I find the bases either too thick or too wide. And also not ground far enough to the tip of the feather. I end up having to take a sanding block to a number of the feathers I cut to touch up the base for the best fit.

Agree that too thick of a base is the biggest problem.  Since quill contact with the riser or shelf is the main problem when shooting arrows fletched with feathers, I have to believe that having too thick a quill is not good.  I won't mention the name of a batch I bought where this was a problem, but I will say that I have never had this issue with TrueFlight feathers.

TrueFlight are the best,IMO. They have a better, more consistent grind.

Bases too thick are the only problem I've had.

3arrows,,the best 3 inches got made into 2" Rayzars,,,you got the left overs.

Ok,,maybe a bit cynical on my part,,,but I wouldn't be supprised.

All the feather co. are keeping the longer ones for themselves so they can get multiple cuts. I was told this by one of the major suppliers. Unless you are cutting 3 or 4 inch feathers or are making a special cuts there is no point in buying full length.  Jim Pyles

Also along the same lines, are there different size or shape feathers that you use that you can not fine?  I would love to hear about those, as there may be a way in the making to do just that.  Any shape, any size, with the exceptions of really radical curves....but thats in the making as well.  I saw earlier on a post about a 4" nanner.  Very possible to make with ease.  Are there others out there that are looking for something special in the way of a feather cut, with a thin base, and even width to the quill?

I buy full length because I use a lot of different colors in a lot of different shapes.
It would be prohibitive to try to stock all those shapes in all those colors. Besides, many shapes aren't easily available pre-cut.

Full length are 6- 7$ cheaper by the 100. That would pay for a chopper in little while if you use many feathers. I just got a new burner(on sale at FSdiscount), shouldnt take long to pay for that, and you can make any size/shape/wing you want.

Ditto what Westbrook said. I burn full length feathers and get 2  4" fletchings. Cuts the cost in half, with unlimited shapes.
