Kids say the darndest things...

I took my boys 6 and 4 to a 3D shoot the other night at Land O' Lakes in Fenton, MI, just so the boys could get out of the house, and shoot at different things besides our targets in the back yard.  Well, after a few practice shots, we head off to the course.  We are joined by a good friend, Ken, another gentleman and his 2 boys.  We allow the kids to "stalk up" to the target and get off a shot telling them "that is where the little guys shoot from".  So when they are done, My youngest, Lucas 4, tells Ken to "get back to where the really huge guys shoot from".

We all got a chuckle out of that one, but it's not over...About half way thru, a lone shooter comes up behind us, and prepares to shoot at one of the targets, and Lucas again, pipes up with "Let's see what you got".  I don't know where he gets it (actually it's like looking into a mirror), but he had us all smiling that night.  

Get outdoors, it's a great place to be.

At a charity shoot which was a target competition my youngest daughter then 7 stepped up to the line looked up at the compound shooter she was stacked against and the gave him the eye then pointed at her eyes and then into his with the I am watching you signal. She then outshot him and moved up in the standings.  

He came over to me right after she beat him and asked me if that was my kid and told me she totally blew his concentration.  Way to funny.

Me and my 7 yo have been doing several 3d shoots this year. At some point I noticed that if the target was dark and round like a bear or javelina it's new name is now haawwwggg. I do not know where he has picked this up but it is very funny when he tells you what the next target is.

My wife reminded me that at the last shoot while I was getting prepared to shoot, I started to draw and just as I was to full draw and releasing my son calls out "what smells like syrup, I smell syrup". Of course I pluck the string and was lucky that the arrow hit the target. I did not smell the "syrup" maybe he was wanting some pancakes.

I was running a kids range with a friend.  I saw a little six year old flinging arrows everywhere but the target.  I helped her and she started hitting the target. My friend saw her improved shooting (unknown to me she had tried unsuccessfully to help her) and came over to the little girl and said your doing really well.  The little girl looke up and said: "Yes, he showed me how to do it.  He is much better than you."  Next thing I knew I had to teach how to teach.

I took two of my grandsons then 9 and 7 to an evening 3-D shoot last year and the the 7 yo was spraying the arrows pretty good and loosing a few.  I told him to buckle down, aim and concentrate because he was almost out of arrow.  He said "Grandpa, you're just going to have to make some more."

they do have a way of not sugar coating things, don't they?  I love all the stories.

My 5 year old daughter and I were taking a early morning bow hike by our cabin. We were fortunate enough to come across a BIG Bull Moose feeding lazily in a little pocket meadow. We got with in 15 yards and watched him feed and enjoy his morning meal. He then bedded down no more than 10 yards in front of us. My little girl watched with great excitement and enthusiasm then quite as a mouse she leaned into me and whispered “Daddy can I shoot him with my bow?” I smiled like a proud father and said “No peanut. Your arrows have suction cups on them” and without any hesitation her response was “Daddy I can take them off, duh” … I couldn’t help but laugh.

My 'proud dad' moment came at the beginning of April when my son (2 and a half at the time) was shopping with his mom and Nana at Target.

While going around the clothes racks he said he was "hunting deer"  He went up to another mother who was there with her toddler and infant in a shopping cart and "handed" them a package saying, "Here, I caught a deer for you. It's all cut up and everything!" LOL!
The mother's response, "Good, I don't know how to do that part."

Ava, my 6 year old, and I had a little contest. For every arrow she got to stick in the target from 10 feet she got a dollar. For every bullseye I hit from 30 yards I got a dollar...at the end I owed her some coin. She says "Dad, you keep shooting like that and I am gonna be rich." I told her it was all for fun and no money would change hands. She told me "I was scared to pay up."

The next week at the zoo I was eyeballing a Zebra. She walks up to me and says "Dad come on. I know you're just standing there pretending to shoot him" then asked where my arrow would go. She's gonna be a great hunter I tell ya (or a stand-up comic)

I have one more…. After a long unsuccessful elk season my daughter and I (the same one from the previous story) were on the couch watching elk hunting on TV… Half way through the show she looked over at me and said “Daddy, I hope you’re paying attention. You could learn a lot from these guys.” I smiled at her knowing exactly what she was implying and asked “What do you mean Peanut?” Her response was this… “Well Daddy. Mommy and I can’t rely on you to fill our freezer and these guys know how to shoot some elk”

Again, all I could do was laugh.

Tricia and I were at the Rock shoot this spring and were following a father and his two sons  about 7 and 3 years old on one of the courses.  The little one had a glass bow and two arrows and was having a blast.  We came to a 30 yard straight downhill shot at a cougar target.  After the dad and older boy shot from the stake, the dad told the little guy he would shoot from closer.  The little boy looked up and sais "No way dad, I am gonna nail that cougar" and let one fly.

My kid is 13 and a wise guy, the other night we were shooting and he missed the outline of the deer on our burlap target. He said that one is down, I told him you missed the deer he told me "I'm using big broadheads"

My 2 1/2 yr old comes over to the house and sees my "bows and arras" and he points and says "shoot 'em", shoot 'em...."  Can't wait to make him a bow!
