Before I buy new arrows, advice please

I just got a new bow from Wes Wallace, 45@28 recurve, and it bare shafted perfectly with a 29.75" CE 150 with 250 grain point.  Don't want to shoot that heavy an arrow, so I'm debating between some CE 90's or some Heritage 1916's.  Does this sound right with 125 grain points?  I can't figure out how to get S. Miller's calculator to work, so I wanted some advice before I place the order.  Thanks, Paul.

The 1916's are quite a bit softer in spine than the 90's, but the 90's would be a lighter shaft so you could compensate using a heavier point.

The new Heritage 75's would be a much closer match to the 1916.

So, based on my bare shaft results (fletched arrow like that shoots well, too), I won't be going to an arrow spine that is too weak with either one, would I?  I would hate to get a bunch of arrows that won't work.  Thanks, Paul.

Both of those (1916 and 75) are significantly weaker than the Heritage 150's.  But you are also wanting to cut your point weight in half.

How long of an arrow do you require for clearance?  What is the degree of center cut on your bow?  I'm guessing 3/16" past center.  Do you have a B-50 string or one of the FF type materials on it?

At least 29" arrow, ff string, I would say 3/16 sounds right.  I was just surprised that it took that much point weight for the 150's; that leads me to believe that the 90's would be good with 125-175 grains, or even the 1916's.

2117 with 125gr points should shoot very nice out of that bow i have been playing with spine wgt. my self thats what i was shooting and after buying 1/2 dozens of 2 different carbon and 3 different alluminum thats what im back to

Before you buy, use Stu's calculator.  Enter everything EXACTLY.  You will be so close it will scare you.  I wish I would have known about it before spending $$$$$ on arrows that didn't shoot well.

I believe you could tune all 3 in that bow, although with your degree of cut past center the 75's and 1916 would likely be borderline weak.  You should be able to tune the 90 very nicely if you're not stuck on that 125 gr point weight.

If its a longer bow, Stu's calculator may not be close.  I have a 66" 55lb Wallace Royal that I draw 27.75".  It loves 30.5" 600 spine MFX with 200gr points and 100gr inserts.  My arrows ended up at 565gr. It shoots bare shafts perfectly, it paper tunes perfectly and it like my broadheads. Your results may differ based on your shooting style. Stu wasn't close for this bow.  It is pretty close for some bows.  Do not buy a bunch of arrows without testing first. Good luck, working up the right arrows is part of the fun!

Well you already have an arrow the is perfect so lets put it in the calculator and see what the dynamic spine is.  Looks like 38.7.

Use that as your bow standard.

The 75 at the same length with a combo of pt and insert of 180gr looks real close and will weigh about 458.

 This is an easy one....

The Carbon Express Heritage 150 has a spine of .487 and they are 10gr per inch

So find a .500 spine shaft that is lighter in Grains per inch. Alot of different shafts come to mind depending on the direction you want to head.

What is the total weight of the Heritage 150 arrow you have? I'm guessing 580-610gr.
 
Alot of different ways to drop the weight.

Victory .500 spine shaft is 7.2gr =214.2 @ 29.75
Heritage .487 spine shaft is 10gr =297.5 @ 29.75

save 83.3gr

Thanks for the replies.  I can't figure out how to make the spine calculator work; can't even tell if what I downloaded is right.  I just figured the next lightest spined carbon (90) should be it.  Only thing bothering me is that I see they only come 29" max.

Mike, it does open in Excel, but I can't tell for the life of me what I am looking at or what I am supposed to do.  I have the most recent computer setup, etc., but I really don't know much about computers at all.  Would anyone care to run the numbers and see what arrow is recommende?  60" bow, 45@28, split finger, ff string, 29" arrow (actually would prefer tad longer, I may be drawing 1/2" more than that), 125 point.  Don't know what I need to put in exactly.  I do know the 150's with 250 grains shoot like darts, but that's too heavy.  I am not a fan of more than 10gpp, and I like to practice at longer ranges, so the heavy arrows aren't floating my boat.

Have you given any thought to the Beman ICS 500 @ 7.3 gpi? There are other choices in the 35/55 (.500) spine range that weigh less than 10 gpi.

Pitbull ran the calculator for me and it came up with a CE 150 at 29" with 125gr point.  I guess the calculator is not going to work for me, as that would make what I have even stiffer.  I need something weaker, for sure, as the 150's are considerably stiff even with 200gr points at 29.75".  I guess I will try some 90's and just see how they act.

Really?  3Rivers says they come 29" as raw shafts; any way to confirm this?
