Help with brace height for snakey osage selfbow?
« on: June 28, 2010, 07:20:00 PM »
I was the fortunate high bidder on the snakey osage selfbow on the St. Judes Auction that Walt Francis donated!!!  I must admit this is my first forray into selfbows and was curious as to what brace height range to try with it?  Also curious as to what spine arrows might fly out of this beauty?  It is marked 62@26", but as Walt said it feels more like low 60 at my 28" draw.  It does not have a shelf on it, but man was I surprized at how well this thing shoots!  I can't wait to make up some wood arrows for this thing and drive one through a deer this fall!  Within 10 shots I was putting arrows almost without fail in the sweet spot at 20 yards, and seemed to have some serious thump to it as well.

I think I've found a new love in archery!

By the way the bow is a Tribal Archery bow, does anyone have any info on these or know where I could find out more about them?

Thanks to all, I will post pics when I get back in town later this week!

Brace height for self bows is usually set at a "fistmile" which is the thumbs up measure. Arrow spine is often about equal to draw weight - original spine numbers came from the days when all bows were like self bows. So, 60# should be close. Experiment with length and point weight. Good Hunting!

I usally brace my selbows 6-6&1/2",I would try around there and see how it works out for you.As for arrows, thats a tough question for a selfbow. Some selbows are close to a center shot and some are not depending on if the bow is twisted some or not.You may have to try a few different spines to see what will work best.Usally they'll use a weaker spine but everyone is different.

Thanks guys that gives me a starting point.  I appreciate the responses....Now to get serious about killing a muley with this beautiful, great preforming bow!

To be honest I thought I would have to put a shelf on this bow in order to shoot it well, but I've come to realize that I can shoot it very well off my bowhand, is there a trick to getting the same height (of the arrow on your hand) or is it all just repetition?  Sorry for all the questions, but this is new to me....Awesomely new!
