Need some help with arrow spine.
« on: June 30, 2010, 02:08:00 PM »
I'm purchasing a Bear Montana Longbow (50#)and was wondering what type of arrow setup would be optimal.

The bow is not centershot, but is pretty close to it, so when using the 3rivers arrow chart I kind of take both sides (centershot vs not) into consideration.

I was thinking that with 125 grain tips, and a 29.5" length, that a 500 grain would work best.

Does anyone think this spine will be a bit too light, or perhaps I should increase my arrow length?  My draw length is 28" give or take.

Thanks for the help guys!

Regards,
Scotty

kinda depends on what type arrow. allum, carbon?

i did some calculation on stu 's calculator and 150 grain tip was better than 125 at your length

cutting off a inch would stiffin up your spine. so you would need more alot more weight.

what arrows do you have... i can get a better calculation

55-59 lb spine in a good wood arrow.

Thanks for the replies so far.

I was going to get:

(3 Rivers traditional only carbon arrow)
They got good reviews, and look pretty nice.

Think 500 spine would work (at 29.5") being shot out of a 50# Bear Montana longbow with a 28" draw?

Just realized I was talking about grain rather than spine.

I'm getting a 50# bear montana longbow (it has fast flight string) and was wondering if a 500 spined carbon arrow with 125 grain tips would shoot right out of it.
I have a 27-28" draw, and am shooting 29.5" arrow (might go 29 or 30 if it work better)

Sorry for the technical questions, I'm still learning and don't want to order the wrong arrows because they are quite expensive.

Thanks,
Scotty

Be careful on cutting your arrows.  I used to shoot 29.5" draw (and cut all my Gameegetter to that length + 1") but after reading stuff on here and watching a few of the videos my draw is now over 30" closing in on 30.5.  I am looking at getting some GrizzlyStik Alaskan's and will probably just shoot them full length.

Well right now I have about a 27 inch draw it seems, but sometimes I pull 28 inch.  That means that with a 50# bow, I'm shooting like 47-50 pounds roughly.

I got that down, but then the center-shot vs not confuses me.  The bow I'm getting (Bear Montana longbow) isn't center-shot, but it is pretty CLOSE to center-shot.
When I look at the 3rivers arrow chart, there are two tables.  One for centershot (tells me 400 spine), one for NOT centershot (tells me 500 spine_.  Since my bow is close to centershot, but not quite, I have to pick one or the other, which is why I was wondering if 500 spine would work.

Sorry, I'm still new and a lot of this stuff is still French to me.

i would start saving for a better bow and just work on form and having fun with that one ,for as short of time as possible . those bows will hand shock the teeth out of your head and jack upyour bow arm tendons to boot ...goodluck. im not sure if they r ff friendly but id definately look into a ff string it should help alot with the handshock .  :scared:    :help:    :campfire:
form is everything! shoot well shoot hard.
