40 acres and traditional hunting Photos page 2 ******
« on: July 04, 2010, 09:10:00 PM »
Well I have moved from five acres to having 40 acres of old forest ,It has never been selective cut ,There are a few trees where I see some really old stomps .But I was able to acquire 40 acres ,On A dead end road ,In the mile on that road there is only three houses ,We went and search the land today ,I found three Stands that are on four by fours that were made about five years ago ,All of them need new floors but other than that they're OK ,I'm looking forward to heving 40 acres for traditional only !

God is gracious ,

We searched for about 2 hours and 80° weather we didn't find one set of antlers ,But lots a deer trails ,And a grassy meadow (about 2 acres that is there bedding area .And it's only 75 miles from my house .

Enjoy your new hunting land.  And please, make sure those stands are safe before using them.  Be careful installing new floors.

Post it now, so anyone who has been hunting on it will see the signs now and find a new place to hunt.
Some people won't give up an old hunting spot easily.
Good luck.

Tear down those 2 x 4's and use hang on or climber stands, safety first when off the ground.Post the property heavily now and then enjoy come fall. Good luck.
The essence of the hunt for me is to enter nature and observe+ return safely occasionally with the gift of a life taken.

Thanks guys ,

Only one of the stands "Looked" safe !

Famous last words

I will probably tear down the top part of that one and redo it ,But I don't know if I'll do it this season .I have a Treewalker and it is a real stable and comfortable climbing stand .

There are some oak trees that are near all the stands, that have high growth ,It just amazes me how old the forest is ,I was expecting to have to go in and do a lot of Clean up work. But it looks like it's gonna be a great place for a Gilly Suit and a traditional bow.

And you guys with the imitation ideas are not too far off .Yes there are rewards and hunting on your own land by yourself ,But you can't beat a two day hunt in a wall tent on a weekend with a new friend.

I will be posting it in the next couple weekends. It is posted now ,But not with my name on it which has to have.

What's really nice is the north end has a corn field .And that cornfield is about five acres away from my land and by the bedding area .

A great spot would be to the Eastside of that bedding area and a little bit north .They will be coming in and out of that corn in late season ,I talk to the owner and he leaves up 10 or 15 rows of corn all winter long .It's gonna be exciting.

It's probably no coincidence that there are some oaks near the stands.  Whenever I am scouting a new area and find remnants of an old stand I pay close attention.  I look for a nearby food source, bedding area or a well used trail.  Kind of like letting someone else do some of the scouting for you.  Enjoy.

The reason that stand is there is there's one trail coming into another trail about 10 yards in front of it ,Another reason for the stands ,Bears !Our neighbor which is about 20 acres away other the inside of the Cornfield has had one bear continuously, coming to his bird feeders. He said it's about a 250 -300 lb. bear. The other neighbor 40 acres to  south, Invited me over and showed me a video of bears in his yard. And that videos taken last week .

I don't much care for bear meat,But if I can find some way to give away the bear meat to someone who wants it, I think I'll give it a try this year.  The last time the land has been hunted by someone that (Had permission )Was five years ago.  A 30 yards shot in the 40 acres would be a very long shot .It's mostly gonna be about close encounters and I like that .We went to the swamp that's at the southeast end (about 5 acres)  ,And there's a few trails running around the swamp ,It's gonna be a fun year ,Can't wait to see it on the first snow. Here's a photo of the bedding area .It only shows about 1/4 what the size it actually it is 2 to 3 acres of bedding area .

Large birch trees

The 40 acres runs full length on this nice road, No problem with access

Thanks

The other part of the story is when I was a kid I hunted 40 acres of farmland that was wooded. And never in my lifetime would I ever think I would actually own 40 acres , And feel like a kid again at 60 !

Now I'm beginning to understand some of the things that people say on here when they walk their land, And tell the stories

I am going stumping this weekend,Maybe get me a Ground Grizzly !
