What kind of airbrush for bow finish?
« on: May 08, 2007, 10:38:00 PM »
Just wondering what type of airbrush you use for finishing your bows. How big of a pattern does it throw? Thanks

I use a small gravity feed touch up gun that I bought from harbor freight. Seems just right for the job. The hvlp will use less product and create less overspray but costs a little more. The airbrush I have didn't want to put out enough spray for me but it's not a real good one.

I use a cheap Badger air brush, good for kids 8 and up  :D  But works great, very little waisted finish and it didn't cost much.

I use airbrushes daily at work, I have several of them.  But for bows, I like a larger pattern than they can spray.  I use a touch up automotive spray gun.  There is more waste, but I can get a better finish, which is what I care about.
Air brushes put out a small pattern, even if adjusted wide open.  You'll get the finish drying on parts of the bow while other parts are wet.  The result is an inconsistant shine.
I really like Fullerplast.  Expensive, but fills grain like nothing else I have used.

Hey Dano, I was wondering if you had a comment on what OconeeDan had to say above. Does your Badger brush put out enough material to give you even coverage on larger riser parts? I have experienced uneven coverage and too small a pattern with my airbrush.

One more thing, if you want to use an airbrush, the one Dano mentioned is as good as any, as it will put out a larger pattern than most airbrushes.  I should have not said you can't get a good finish with an airbrush, it's just a bit more difficult.
Never tried Thunderbird.  If using an airbrush, the slower drying the finish, the better.

Yep, Dan's right. Thunderbird has a much slower dring time (2-3 hours between coats) so it works well with an airbrush. If I was using something else I have a small gravity feed sprayer that works great.

I like to own an IWATA air brush.  They claim they are some of the best.

Has anyone tried to use the Product that David Soza uses on the DAS Master called Permacoat?  Supposed to be a flexible acrylic type paint...
