Question to you guys, headed to Wyoming in september and was wondering what options there are in transporting a one piece 58 in bow. Checking for my bro.

I bought a Fly rod case at Sports Academy last year to go to Canada. It was black and you could adjust the length up 72 inches and down to I don't remember but I had a 58 inch shrew in it along with 12 arrows. Mike

That sounds good, forgot to state that it is a recurve. Do you think that it would fit in the tube style.

Longspur77,
Look into some sch 40 PVC pipe. Probably need 5 or 6". Pick up some end caps and pad them yourself. Just cut the pipe a little longer for the padding.

I'm no baggage handler might be an extra charge. Or you can do the same and send it USPS Priority Mail insured with delivery confirmation. To your desired hunting place.
Hope this helps.
Mike

Probably not work for a recurve. Mike

If you absolutely must do it, the PVC tube is a good suggestion.  But I would really think seriously about forgetting about trying to fly with a one piece bow.

With the limit of a maximum of one checked bag on most airlines you are looking at paying for a second bag in order to bring your bow.  And it will be an oversize bag to boot, so it could easily end up costing you $100 EACH WAY to bring it with you.  If it were me, I would use that $200 to put toward the purchase of a take down bow and pack that bow inside my other checked bag.  It's a great excuse to buy a new bow, and we all need all the excuses we can get!

The other draw back is that as an oversize item, your bow will be much more suseptable to not making the flight with you.  Not having your bow arrive with you would really put a damper on your trip.  Do you really want to put the outcome of your hunting trip in the hands of a baggage handler?

As an alternative, is there any way to ship the bow ahead of time?  At least you would know before you even left that your bow arrived safely and is there waiting for you.

Good luck!

David,

I would recomend using a padded gun case made for carrying two rifles. Great padding, hard case and lockable. Your Brother might get tired of saying "It's a bow, not a gun", but it is the best protection for flying with a one piece bow I have come up with.

Check the regs for size and such.

I've flown several times using the tube type recurve travel case sold be 3Rivers Archery, item #5136. My one piece recurves have been to the Northwest Territories twice and to Edmonton, Alberta twice. That being said, if you can UPS it to someone at your destination ahead of time it certainly would be cheaper. Back when I did my flying we were allowed two pieces of checked baggage so there wasn't any extra fee for the bow travel case.

I will let him know about the buying of a new bow. He will love that. He will tell me to kiss off and he is driving. I guess i will pack my takedown in my bag wrapped in hunting gear. I dont feel like paying for an extra bag anyway.

Ship the bow ahead of you,to your destination! It will be there waiting for you when you get there! That way it won't be in Georgia while your in Wyoming!!

Yea, that is a great idea. If i was in the mountains with no weapon i would immediatly turn apache and flint nap some heads and build a bow. Either way it would probably not turn out for a very productive hunt.

I used PVC pipe to ship my longbow to Colorado, and had the pleasure of seeing it roll off the baggage cart unnoticed while changing planes in Denver. I hollered at the gate attendant, and he ran down and got it put back on the cart. Then, when we got to Telluride, it wasn't on the plane. It came in several hours later, thank goodness, and we weren't so far from the airport that it was a major problem.

The ship to before flying is a great suggestion. If you do not like that idea, borrow, or buy a TD out of the classified section that will fit your needs. Well worth the money when your traveling by plane and you'll save a bundle by buying used. You can always sell it after the trip. Oh, by the way, a TD reurve or LB ships easier/cheaper then a one piece as well.

I have flown many times with a one piece recurve case made by Viking Voyager..  Holds two bows and it is bullet proof.. Quality case with leather wrapped end caps..

Mike at the Nocking Point stocks these cases.

They make sewer pipe that is 3000# crush. It is super thin walled but strong and lighter than pvc. You can buy it at most hardwear stores.

Why not just ship it to the hunting destination?
