His films show what appears to be honest shots, both hits and misses, at wild game in fair chase situations. In Hill's films, there appears to be wires or snares holding game still for the shot. I have watched them in slow motion, and several of the animals where tied by the leg to a wire, you can see it moving across the grass. And I read an account in a vintage archery mag about Tembo the Elephant being shot in the leg with a rifle, essentialy hobbling him so Hill could get close enough to shoot him with an arrow. I wish that I had never bought the Hill films. Hill was one hell of a shot, but Fred Bear is THE #1 MAN in my book!
Interesting, I have the Tembo dvd coming from Netflix this week.  I will pay close attention to this.

Let's turn that around and say the top archers of today have to make their own equipment and use self bows, linen strings and wood arrows, and shoot with the masters of years gone by.
Now how ya betting on that one.

One has died for my soul.

What Hollywood put out and what Hill did on his hunts are two different things.

What about Mr.Ferguson? Seeing him shoot it out with Howard Hill and Lajos Kassai would be brilliant!

:coffee:  Man let's throw in a 2 blade vs 3 blade and a recurve vs longbow debate in here too  :)  This one could be around for awhile. It's a long way to fall.

If i din't have to work all the time and chase a two year old around before i practice the playing field might be even.Ya think those guys worked a full time job and then practice or was practicing their job?I'd like to think they had a little more time on there hands than those of us in todays ratrace. How many bows ya think Rick Welch makes a day and still whoops tail on a regular basis. The greats of every generation are great, some are just talked about more than others.I think todays champs could hang.

He quit because he was tired of being accused of cheating because he always won. He would even let the others take his score and pull his arrows and they still said he was cheating so he just quit because it took all the fun out of it for him.

This topic gets debated in all sports to no avail. There simply isn't an acceptable answer. Could Magic Johnson compete with Labron James? Could Frank Shorter out run Ryan Hall? Can Hoyce Gracie compete with Matt Hughes? No. As was shown in the ring. We evolve. The sport evolves. Equipment evolves. It's okay to say that they are legends for what they did in their time. To compare them to today's shooters is really unfair. Heck my kids are doing work in 3rd grade that I did in 5th grade. Each generation takes it to the next level - and that's okay - even good.

Howard Hill was the man in field archery!! Hate to watch his videos cause( Yes) you can see the wire on the animals leggs..
Fred Bear was a great shot too. Though I think he was alittle over rated as a hunter??   I think some of us could do just as well..if we could afford to hunt all of those places back then for monthes on end..
