How can you fix a warped limb?
« on: January 09, 2007, 12:33:00 AM »
A nice guy is going to let me have a bow that he says has a slight warp in the lower limb. I did a search in pow wow, shooters forum, and how to and one post said do a search that you could do it with heat?

Thanks

Depends; lots of good and bad solutions. Need to know more and see a pic. Some things are possible others are not; but you came to the right place some of the folks here are geniuses!

hairdryer heat the area up where the twist is hot enough that its real warm to hold almost hot to touch then twist the limb in the oppisite direction of the twist as soon as you do that run cold water over the limb its prety easy good luck .

Yep Dorris, that's the way I do it too, never had one fail or re-twist....... yet.

I've used hot tap water, then twist and hold while under cold water.  Repeat as needed till the limb is straight.

Never did the hair dryer.  I would say to be careful with one as I think a hair dryer could get a lot hotter than hot tap water (typically 130 deg. F or so.)

Like Otto says don't get in a hurry with the dryer, I've done a bunch with the hot water and cold water. Either way you should be able to get it. You will usually have to twist it in the right direction beyond where it's straight. Once it is cool string it up using a stringer, see that the string aligns in the string grooves properly and let it strung. This will hold it in the right place every day look at it and pull back several times and check that it is staying aligned.
Lots of the bear bows get twisted and most can be retaught.
Good luck,

I didnt use any heat and it twists back just fine.   Learned that as my first bow was twisted right off the show room floor.  Took it to another shop and had the owner tweak it back.  Saw how easy it was and havent looked back.

Use a stringer and you wont have this problem

Also you have a email.

Is the limb twisted or warped?  I have one with both a twist and a warp.  I define warp as the centerline of the limb has a bend in it, as opposed to twist where the belly of the two limbs are not in the same plane.  I've not yet been able to fix the one with warp and twist.  Luckily, it was given to me as a project!  I've fixed a couple with twist.  One without heat, one with.

I have a bow with laminations of bamboo and carbon.  Will the hot and cold treatment work with them?
