Which "riser" for me ????
« on: July 14, 2010, 06:24:00 PM »
O.K........I need a general opinion here on these two risers. Right after Compton I put in an order for my very own Stalker "Striker" Recurve built by South Cox. I was (and still am) up in the air about which riser I like the best. My wood choices were something that I have had in my mind for quite some time now. Cocobolo and Osage. Being the nice guy that he is, he said that he would build a riser "both ways" and let me choose which one I liked the best. I "thought" that would make the choice a little easier........but.........as you can see from the picture below, they BOTH look dang nice !!!

My intentions are to have the limb veneers match the side of the riser's wood on each side. In other words either osage on the belly side and cocobolo on the back side, or vice versa.

Choices.........choices.........choices   :banghead:    :banghead:    :banghead:

Give me some help here folks......PLEASE !!!

The sooner that I make my choice, the sooner he can start gluing up the limbs. Either way, this is gonna be one nice lookin' bow.

Where are my pics? Don, what a choice to make! I like the one on the right. I heard I was in the top 3 to finish so I should be close to yours in finish time.

I like the dark wood on the outside for camo reasons. They are some nice pieces.

Boy, looks like your hand would sink right into those grips, doesn't it?  I'm partial to the left one too.  But, yeah, both are perfect really.

Some juniper limb veneers would look nice with either one of those.

I prefer the riser on the right, the grain of the Cocobolo on the upper section is amazing.

Wow what a choice, maybe you could just get both of them.  Or maybe put both in a hat and draw one out.  Either way your going to have a great bow.  I have one bow that has the osage in the center and it would be my choice.  I shot one up there and was impressed so you are getting a great bow.

Good luck on choosing! That is the hardest thing for me when ordering a bow.  It comes down to what you like...no one else.

Really digging the riser on the left.  The cocobolo on the heel of the grip is awesome and I just like the layup of that one better.  Either way you'll do just fine, nice looking risers for sure...Mike

I like the right one, the coco is beautiful. I think as the osage mellows it will be a better accent than the majority color. I also think the stripes stand out better with the right one. They are both beautiful.

I think it's an optical illusion but the riser with the cocobolo on the outsides looks shorter and squatter than the other one.  I like short and squat looking...in a bow riser anyways.

The one on the left, for sure.

No, make it the one on the right - I really like it with more cocobolo.

No, always trust your first instincts.  Definately the one on the left.

Did I help?      :D

For me it is impossible to choose one and be totally confident that I made the right choice.
Have to get both to be certain.
Whew!!!

Good luck with this.

I usually lean more to the right.  Far right.  With this choice I have to say LEFT, LEFT, LEFT, LEFT, LEFT, LEFT, LEFT, LEFT, LEFT, LEFT, LEFT, LEFT, LEFT, LEFT, LEFT!!  :jumper:

Okay.......just got off the phone with South. I went with the one on the................................................................................................................................................................................. ...................................................................................................................................LEFT............................

Thank-You all for your most valued opinions. I also asked him if he didn't already have any, if he could find me some juniper or eastern red cedar for laminations of BOTH belly and back of the bow. I'm thinking that the reds/yellows/oranges will work just WONDERFUL with the osage and cocobolo.

Thank-You.......Travis aka 4point for that suggestion. Your suggestion just turned this bow into a masterpiece. Now to just sit back and wait for South to work his magic and before you know it......the bow will be in my grubby little hands.

I agree with Mike about the "grips" on these bows. They sure do look and feel GREAT.
