Snake skins?
« on: July 16, 2010, 10:52:00 AM »
Hey guys,
I have a question for those of you who have applied snake skins to your limbs (recurve)......Does it slow the speed down noticibly, or at all?  Has anyone chronographed their bow before they skinned it, and then after to see the effects?   Also, did you notice a difference in the noise?
Thanks for the info.
Mike

I have two bows with skins and the only difference I have noticed is they look way better with skins.

Thanks for the response Barry.  I just picked up a Predator.  It is a shooter, but it is pretty "plain jane."  I was thinking of skinning the limbs but I was wondering if it would affect performance.  Did you skin them yourself?  If you did, was it much of a job?

Also have you thought of using Limsations from Onestringer? They will give you a snakeskin look, easy to apply and can be removed later without harming the bows finish. And they cost less then real skins and less work to install. And they have more patterns then just snakeskins, just another way of dressing a bow up.

As a matter of fact John, I have used Onestringer's Limbsations on a longbow once.  It was okay, but I think that maybe a real skin would look better.  That is still a possibility though.  Onestringer is top notch to deal with!

I put a set of skins on my ACS last year. As far as I could tell, it lost 1 fps after the skins were applied.

Thanks for the info Allen.  I can live with that!
Now, does anyone know a good place to get some skins at a reasonable cost?

Contact Mike Yancey at Pine Hollow Longbows (they are a sponsor here). He will set you up with some skins.

Hey Mike I didn't put them on myself. One came with the skins and the other I had a friend at our archer club put them on.  He did a great job and it really dressed up my bow.

I doubt snake skins will have much effect on the performance of your bow. If so, it should be small.

Here's a pic or two of my Predator with copperheads. These snakes have very thin skins so it should have the least amount of effect on performance.

No effect on any of my bows with skins.  Except more compliments:)
