African Lion quiver (claw pics added pg.2)
« on: May 10, 2007, 08:55:00 PM »
Got a African Lion (female) pelt coming soon. Was thinking about a hip or side quiver made from the paw and or part of the leg. It has all the claws intact. Anyone know how big there paws run? I can't wait to see this and get a look at the fur. If the legs are big enough maybe a back quiver? Anyone have any other ideas what ya can do with this?<><<><

Make a rug or throw for the couch. Much too cool to cut up.

A female would probably weigh 350 pounds be about 5 feet long. Big animals. Paw probably bigger than your hand.

Then I see some lion claw inlaid handles for some very cool knives in the near future. Lion fur inlaid armguards. Some back quivers and with lion fur lining at the top (make a lot more quivers that way)

So many options       :D
I would love to drape her over the couch or hang on the wall not enough room and our dog may chew on it...this animal is stunning just to be able to look at let alone utilize.

I'd hate to cut it up. But the gentleman/wonderful friend I got her from is definately getting something made from her & I never expected this. Once I get all caught up, I'm thinking on maybe an African styled quiver with shells, some trim and maybe water buffalo hide for him.
Not too sure yet, this will take alot of thought.

Thanks for the suggestions.    :)

Mickey, thanks for the info on size, I believe she was an alpha female, a paw has got to be quite large regardless, I can't wait to see.    :)

Definately Dave, I may just lightly trim the sides for quiver trim and pull a claw or 2 from the rear pad for a special project...I can't see cutting that up. I'm torn even thinking about it.  :(

I can not wait to see some of the projects Shell will do with the Lion.  I'm sure they will be unique.

Shell, These are some pics I found.  You can get an idea of the size of the claws.

702plmo..

I think those must be mountain lion claws..I have one african lion claw in my posession and its as large as four of those put together.

You are talking a 300 lb animal I would suspect if she was the alpha female.

You will likely find the hair very short on the body like most african game I have seen..and some scars on her thorax and ham/shoulder areas if she was the boss lady.

If I was gonna build a quiver it would be from the head/neck..facing down toward the ground and the neck being the throat of the quiver, and dark brown leather at top and bottom, some brass rivet accents along the top leather and a claw dangling from a piece of polished ebony wood as an adornment.

The strap would be the same dark leather, with brass tack/rivet decoration, and lined on the back with soft leather, and black or jet and brass pony bead edge beading to bind the two sides together.

What about adding some braided grass somewhere to symbolize the african veldt?  I could also see claws around the rim of the opening.

Thanks guys...

Ray that sounds beautiful! I love the idea of the ebony accents and tacking, The pony beads in opposite colors (maybe red and black with white)striping down either side of seams with some claws...

Chuck, I love the idea of braided grass and think I know of a specific bladesmith that I can send it to who does a great job  :D   ...
