By request- palm tab/leather release aid
« on: July 26, 2010, 08:42:00 AM »
I've had a couple of requests to post this in a thread.

I know what I made isn't anything new, it just can't be it's too simple.. simple to make and simple to use.

It's made of a leather strap glued back onto itself with a separate wrist strap attached.
The end that goes around the string is shaped and thinned with a small belt sander.

You can see in the pictures that my anchor point is exactly the same as with my Bateman tab.

I have made several non-mechanical release aids using different designs and materials and this is the easiest to make and the easiest to use and as quiet as to use as my regular tab.

If you have finger issues or painful joints, do yourself a favor and give it a try.

It is ambidextrous so it doesn't matter if you're right or left handed.

Just relax your thumb and the string will do the rest.

It's the same thing I do with my fingers when I shoot the Bateman tab.

Very nice Mudd, I remember back in the day, I had a old non mechanical aluminum release aid that was very similar to The Gold relases.
Zona Custom Recurve: 60" 49# @ 27.5".
Sky Sky Hawk Recurve: 60" 47# @ 27.5".

Thanks Chuck I will be in the shop tomorrow giving Mudds idea a try I know I have some leather and it looks simple to make. This may be the thing that keeps me shooting.

Real easy to make and just as easy to use.

I don't use a different anchor spot and it's as quiet as shooting with my Bateman tab.

There may be a slight learning curve but it is ever so slight. It doesn't work by pinching the leather as much as your thumb is over the front of the string.(look carefully at the 3rd picture from the top)

Trying to do the pressure thing only works with very light poundage bows.

ok I made one just to try and for a 57# longbow I can only draw it back about 12 inches.you must have very strong hands and shoulders or this thing is for a lighter bow.

Mudd, wouldn't it be just as good to revrese the release and grip the folded leather with the top finger. This would be somewhat similar to the way compound shooters use mechanical releases. I also would think that squeezing the folded leather strip with the top finger would also give a smoother release. In posing these questions I am thinking back to when I shot a compound using a mechanical release.

I don't know the answer to your question Ron. The biggest problem is me trying to visualize what you mean.
My short coming is being able to translate the written word to a picture I can grasp. Unfortunately I can't seem to get it. Sorry!

Maybe you can make one, give your idea a try and let me know how it works for you?

Thank you for your reply.

Mudd, I used to have some photos of something similar that we used "back in the day.

It was laid out very similarly except there were two tabs, a short side exactly like yours shows, then the other side of the folded over strap is kept longer so it folds over the first (and string) and extends a bit longer than your shows.  The longer one goes from the outside to  the inside so your thumb holds it in place,

Does the same thing as yours except it makes it way easier to hold and release cleanly, even heavier weights..try it

Well I got out in the shop and built me one and it works great. I cant seem to hit crap with it but at least I am shooting my bow now with almost no pain. It still hurts some but nothing like it was and I can shoot my big bow again. Like I said above I am not real good at hitting what I want but it is coming around hopefully with a few more days of practice and accuracy will be better.

Thanks a bunch guys.
