Boys of Summer
« on: July 29, 2010, 10:45:00 PM »
Marty and the guys in south Florida get to start hunting on July 31 and we are a short time behind them so Reed and I decided to go try to see what a deer looked like anyway.  The light was low and the distance was pretty great, but Reed managed to snap this shot of the Boys of Summer on some public property in Florida tonight.  Unfortunately, it is not open to hunting.

Buck in the back is a nine...closest one is an eight.  GREAT bucks for our area.

Wish I could say this is the effect I was looking for, but it is a pretty cool accident in my mind.

So, from what I gathered from Marty, his deer are rutting.  Florida deer rut when they are in velvet?  Not trying to be a smarta$$, just trying to understand and learn...the whole concept of hunting deer in July and them being in rut doesn't make any sense to a Michigander!

I haven't seen any big bucks in my area but I have seen some mature old does in the thick stuff.

Florida has at least 3 rut times. In south FL the bucks have hard horns and are chasing does now, Where I live which is 20 miles north of Gregg bucks are still in velvet, I usually see the most rut activity in late October...and Northwest FL the rut can be in January..
