Best spray can bow finish???
«
on:
August 02, 2010, 03:00:00 AM »
I think I'm going to have to finish a custom bow.
What is the best satin or matte spray can finish?
I'm thinking about minwax satin poly U. Maybe even minwax spray laquer.
I'm looking for a good waterproof hopefully non-yellowing sealer.
I don't have a spray rig. I'd like to buy the stuff in a spray can.
What would you want on your bow?
Thank you

I've used Minwax spar urethane with (satin) with good results. 5/6 coats - one every 45 minutes and let it dry for a minimum of 3 days. I use short burst holding it about 18 inches away from the bow.
Good luck

I don't know if it's the best but it sure is one of the easiers. DEFT wood finish in the blue and white can. Use the satin and it does a great job for the hobbiest.

I'm with Mike. Deft gives a really nice finish. I had one bow come in that had beeb done with Minwax Spar urethane that had yellowed badly. Maybe thay had used too many coats.
Tru Oil gunstock finish also does a nice job and is a wipe on finish - easy to apply.

The Custom Oil I mentioned gives the look of hand rubbed oil but with the benefits of polyurethane. It is self leveling and very easy to use. I've always heard good things about Deft but never tried it.

Thanks everyone!
Is the DEFT sealer we're talking about "Clear Wood Finish Brushing Lacquer"
I looked at the deft site and this one seemed to fit the bill.
Am I on the right track???
Also if it is a lacquer any one try minwax spray lacquer?
Thanks!

Deft works well on oily woods such as Cocobolo , my choice for the other woods is Tru-oil and yes we have it in a spray can.
For the oily woods I shoot a couple of coats of Deft then after that spray with Tru oil.
Make sure to sand between coats or the new layer will not stick to the last one .
To remove the shine rub out with 0000 steel wool at the end and wax with either Tru-oil wax or furniture polish.

I have used Deft in a spray can. The only thing it is not recommended for exterior use. I use Min Wax Poly first for exterior use and then sprayed Deft afterwards so I know the bow is sealed for exterior use.

I'm too ignorant to build a bow, but I once sanded the limbs on a Martin Savannah, and then painted it camo with green and brown camo paint from Wal-Mart. I used springtime maple leaves as a stencil to make it look woodsy. After the paint dried for a few days, I sprayed it with satin poly. A durable finsih. I wish I'd kept that bow.

I've used Deft satin ureathane and was very pleased with the results. After hearing some of the comments on true oil I think I'm going to try it just to see how it well it works.

I fill the wood with three or four coats of epoxy , sanding after the second coat and then finish with tru oil . I doubt that you could get a better finish or one easier to repair . it is completely weather proof and absolutely stunning if done right. The problem is that it takes about a week longer than spraying a bow in one day. However I still do all my bows that way. If you check my site you can see what kind of finish it gives. Steve

Sixby,
What epoxy do you use and do you sand after the final coat before applying the true oil? Thanks.
