Now that the way to hunt.
Congrats bud it is very well deserved, one day I'll learn to knap my own points but till then I'll just be envious of those who have achieved this goal.

Great stuff, Clint!  Congratulations on your first successful hunt with stone!

What did you use to adhere the point to the wood?  We chatted a little about the pitch you used when you tested stone points on a dead buff.  I was a bit concerned then that the points' breakage pattern might have been due to weak/brittle adhesive.  If this point was fastened with the same stuff, I'd sure recommend something different -- like five-ton epoxy.  I've never had one (or seen one) come completely off the shaft like yours.

woody- i used some pine pitch that i made up. pine resin, charcoal, manure and bees wax. isn't that what is normally used or is there a better resin/pitch to use? i know you can use epoxy but i wanted to use a primitive method. i have some spinefex that i gathered from central australia. its resin was used by our natives as an adhesive. i'm going to try that too.

what do you use besides epoxy?
thanks for the help by the way. one of the points you made me for the buffulo testing was with me on this hunt. i touched up the tip and rehafted it for use on a scrub bull but i never got the chance at one. next time......

Very cool! I'm going to try stone on my black bear hunt next month. What was that point made from, George Town?

What a nice bow... glad to see it's working hard for you!

Clint, I played with a few things like asphaltum and pine pitch but quickly settled on epoxy.  You're quite right that it's not naturally occurring stuff, but it's so strong it keeps the point in position so that it penetrates deeper and cuts more.  That's a trade-off I'm okay with.  YMMV.   :)

So awesome! I have a special flint head that I really need to get into some flesh and vital organ. This might be the year.

Very cool! I have thought about trying knapped heads with my self bow, but since I have to trouble a buddy to make 'em for me I have hated to shoot one and risk damaging/dulling one.

How do they shoot? Rock is surprisingly light compared to a similar profile steel head.

they shoot just fine. mount them and spin test them like you would with any other head and they will fly just as good. i weigh the point i intend to use then tune the shaft using a field point of the same weight then haft the point. i test shoot it into some styrofoam to double check then retouch the edge a little then it goes hunting.
don't think about damaging one, they are just a rock afterall. target panic will set in if you worry about damaging them.

Well done Clint, looking forward to the next one.
Hunting was hazardous, but at least it guaranteed the freedom of the individual.
