Gasket Laquer & Self Nocks?
« on: August 07, 2010, 09:26:00 AM »
I'm getting ready to do my first batch of arrows utilizing self nocks. When using GL, does it fill in the nock?  Do you not worry about it and file them out later?

Thanks!

Yes, it will fill up the nock.  I just file them out or use a bandsaw to "grind" them out.

Fiends don't let friends use gasket lacquer! (unless they are just 3D oriented, fair-weather boys, or live in a desert)

Weaz:  Don't you want an arrow dip that is actually waterproof for Oregon?  GL is notorious for not even being water resistant.

Hey Steve!

What do you suggest for a finish? I'm open to suggestions.

Weaz:  PM sent.  Feel free to post my Rainforest-proven method from the PM if you wish.

Weaz, 2nd PM sent.  HSU will as it is a bit thick.  I guess I would use a knife or file and delicately trim the bulk off it out them touch up with the brown abrasive pad I mentioned.

Minwax Fast Dry Polyurethane (oil base, not the Polycrylic) works very well.  I've lost arrows in the fall and found them the next year and the finish and wood were still fine.  Daly's Pro Fin is good too, and you can get it in your area.

HSU works well but I found it to be a softer finish and prone to target burn.

Steve, I'd be interested in your method if you would care to share.  Always ready to learn something new.

Rick, I dip three tines full strength with a gasket, then rub down with the brown abrasive pads.  I then crest, optionally of course, then shellac over the crest and dip twice or three more times, then rub down with 0000 or the gray abrasive pads and fletch with Duco.

Target burn means less than nothing to me.  Yes it is a wee bit soft but no so bad if it goes on in thin coats.

I spray my feathers with MHSU in a can for a totally waterproof arrow!  (not to much or they will turn into stiff vanes)

Thanks, Steve!  I'll have to play with that a bit.  The thin coats would definitely help with the burn.  I never thought about spraying my fletch; will have to play with that, too.

What is "HSU" and "MHSU?"
