McAlester controled hunt?
« on: August 13, 2010, 07:23:00 PM »
I am lucky enough to be hunting the Deer Creek area the 15-17 of October and have no clue where to hunt.  Any sugestions and did anyone take the velvet tour this year?  What did you see, any in the northern portion(deer creek area).
Thanks for any info you have!

I haven't hunted deer creek, but most of the folks I've seen succesful hunted the bunkers in the northwest corner.  Its been real dry the last three weeks in this area(MacAlester is south of us about 50 mi) so it is just a guess as to whether or not the acorns will make. They take some good bucks out of that area every year. Bill Story is the land mang. on the base. If you can get a minute with him he can help.

Brian: do NOT assume the deer will be far from the roads or the bunkers. I have only hunted Hominy and Boggy but wasted too much time putting my stand far from the roads. Moved it to a pinch point along a creek right behind a bunker and within 100 yards of a road and then killed a buck (definitely not one from the Most Wanted List).

So has anyone hunted deer creek?  Seems all I can find are people who have hunted the other areas.

I have been in Boggy and Hominy but never Deer Creek but the buddies who hunted there seemed to do well along the roads as someone else has said.

Who said Deer Creek was bad?? There aren't any bad spots on the entire base.    :)

No one gets a choice on what area they get to hunt. It just looks like folks here have not been chosen for Deer Creek. I've never stepped a boot into Deer Creek but I'd be overjoyed if I had been drawn.

Have you got the hunting map from the base?
If not, email me and I'll send it. It should help when using a satellite view of the area.

If you can get time to go check it out now, Do that. Talk to anyone that drives past that spot, lives/works in or around that area.

I would even go and talk to the CO ( Commanding Officer ) and see if he can let you view maps. Also ask for any records of game taken in that area, Also check with TPW on any info they can give You.

Bob, no one said it was bad. I have hunted every area there and saw deer in all of them. I drew boggy this year again but I would rather
hunt Hominy or Deer creek.

As far as I know there is no way to prescout other than the time they give you the day before the hunt ( 4-5hrs).

You can look at the area on google earth and get a better idea as to what areas you want to scout when you get down there. I will be down there Nov. 12-14 hunting Boggy.

Being from WA state, and by no way familiar with this hunt???  I'm curious, would this hunt be construed as some type of "High Fence" hunt or are these free-range animals, free to come and go from the military compound?

As I said, I'm just curious, as there seems to be quite a waiting line for these type of hunts from what I can gather  :dunno:

There are no high fences that I know of. The game just knows where it's safe and stays on the post. I'm surprised that there aren't higher fences on the perimeter. Just a 5 strand barbed wire fence as far as I know. Trust me the deer oround the post head quarters area are A LOT calmer than the ones in the hunt areas. The latter are just as wild as any off base.
