Bag target and burlap.
« on: August 23, 2010, 11:19:00 AM »
I covered my shot up bag target with plain burlap today and what a diifernce.  I was going to buy a new cover but thought untill then I would try some burlap I had laying around.  worked like a charm, I used sections of coat hanger bent to hold it in place and did three layers.  No more shot up target.  I think the biggest advantage came when I started shooting.  I drew a deer shoulder on left and right of front so now I visualive a deer facing either direction and shoot where I should.  I think this is going to be realy good for hunting season and at just the right time.  I might still buy a new cover but in the future I will cover up all those bullseyes in the late summer, and shoot at deer or pigs instead.  If you havent tried this I would suggest hitting the nearest fabric store and geting a couple of yards of burlap and a sharpie marker.

I think he is a saltwater "trout" guide since Texas has lots of speckled trout off our coastline.

I'll use feed bags The white poly kind.. I stuff them with old clothes, bags and what ever and use them. Once they get big holes I place them in a another bag and start shooting it again. I have found if you don't stuff them tight, They last longer.

Well I am still living a past life in my imagination.  I lived in Arkansas previously and guided flyfishing for 8 years.  Moved to Tx 2 years ago and yes while we do have trout the fishing is not nearly as good.  I still do an occasional guide trip up there so I guess the name is not a total lie.  I do miss it something fierce so as of late I have been trying to replace some of the fun with a different kind of stick and string. I'v Shot wheels for years but this is my frist fall with a recurve.  Fun and frustrating but out to 15 they'r dead, got to get a bigger yard.

I am lucky as I shot the wheel bow instinctive for a while and then put sights on it so it is not completely new.  I still need to work on getting the first(most important) shot right where I want it but this new target setup is going to help with that I think.

Hey TroutGuide, are there any good flyfishing forums like this one is for traditional archery?

Hey BWD, they are getting to you.  They are $1.63 here at our Co-op. Just bought one to cover my bionic buck.  I'm like trout guide.  If necessary I can draw my own 10 ring.

Well I guess this is a little of topic but since Green started this line of questioning we cant get in too much trouble.    :nono:   The best one that I know is "Fly Fishing Arkansas and Missouri" It is a site with river specific informatin as well as a lot of general info like this site.  a lot more bickering there but overall a very informative site with guys that can answer any question you might have.  It actualy has a global following.

I would love to find burlap bags that cheap I need to check the co-op i guess.

BTW This is realy working out well for me.  I have never had trouble with picking a spot on a deer to shoot but with instinctive shooting this is making my first shot much more consistent because I always have the same sight picture to deal with.  Buyllseyes are good for repetitive form shooting but for hunting simulation this burlap is great.

LA Trapper, I should have known I was paying retail...still beats paying what BPS wants for a cover I reckon. I know how to draw too.

Down in the "People's Republik of Lawrence" there is a coffee shop that gives the coffee bean sacks away. Nice bigs sacks and heavy burlap.
Good coffee there too...  :)

Feed stores and coffee roasters are good sources of bags for targets. I can get burlap for $1 a bag.  Lumber yards get their lumber in loads covered with plastic, usually can get for free.  Stuff the bags as tight as can and you get a target that will last a long time.  My compound friends can't shoot them.  Cheap and easy.
