My first attempt at splicing feathers
« on: August 29, 2010, 03:45:00 PM »
I think I'm hooked.  I really like how they turned out and am looking forward to hunting with these two sets in a couple of weeks.  Elk, muleys and black bears here I come!

Doing this has rekindled my desire to get some wood shafts and start cresting as well.

Look great Travis ! Did you strip them or just butt splice them ?

I actually stripped these, I've butt spliced a few before, but never tried this method till the last couple of days.

These are natural turkey feathers off birds that I have killed the last couple of years as well, that I split and ground myself, and I finally bought a feather chopper so I don't have to cut them with scissors    can't believe it took me this long to buy  :banghead:

The only thing I'd do different is grind the quill down thinner on the feather that I'm "laying into" the other feather.

Oh yeah, and the splitting/grinding and splicing were all things I saw on Tradgang here and for that I say "THANK YOU TRADGANG" yet again!

OK I think I can see that laying in there, but how do you prep the main feather ?  Is that ground on the top side as well ?

I've got a bag full of naturals ready to go, but don't know where to start !

Your arrows look awesome! thanks for sharing.

Those look very nice. Is there an actual advantage to doing it that way as opposed to the "butt splicing" that is a lot easier?

Gordy-
The way I prep the main feather is with an extremely sharp scalpel.  I simply cut the feather barbs off and then smooth the top side of the quill with the scalpel so it is flat with no "little fuzzy" barbs protruding up.

VTer-
Not sure seeing as how this is the first time I've attempted this style, but I have had my butt spliced feathers develop a "wavy spot" in the feather where they meet up.  We'll see with time and shooting if this method holds up better.

Glass76-
yeah, I think red would look great on them as well.

Thanks guys
