In between discussing options for my bows over the phone,  South Cox of Stalker Recurves and I always seem to share bowhunting stories.  After hearing his last story, I felt like I really had to share it with the gang.

Last season South and his wife Kyri managed to harvest a beautiful velvet Mulie buck. She caught all the footage on video and some of you may have even seen the hunt on the Outdoor Channel back in January.  Last year South snuck up to a Mulie, took a shot and missed.  On his second attempt, he sealed the deal on this huge velvet buck.

The Deadly Duo!

A few weeks ago, South and his wife went on another backpack hunt in Nevada.  With South behind the bow and Kyri behind the camera,  they were ready for anything.  South and Kyri spotted a huge buck and proceeded with a stalk.  Upon final approach, South was on a ridge above the buck.  With Kyri filming and South at full draw he took the shot and missed. (South mentioned to me that it was now time to sign up for Rick Welch's class)      :D      . History would repeat itself and once again they would have a chance for redemption. Upon spotting the second buck, South and Kyri closed the distance.  He made a perfect shot this time, with the buck piling up only 100 yards away.  All the footage was caught again by his wonderful wife.

Talk about spending quality time together!  Congrats to South & Kyri!

If history is truly to repeat itself, the footage will once again air on the Outdoor Channel.  All we can do is hope for the best.  It's always great to see Traditional Bowhunting on TV!

South is off to another great traditional bowhunting season this year! Just last week he shot a color phase black bear in his prime.  The bear squared 6' 3" with a 20 inch skull.  South's pack coming out was loaded at 117 lbs! I praised him for his bowhunting skills but he credited his worn out lucky rabbit's foot for his success in the feild. (sure....South)      ;)

He's heading to Colorado next week with deer and elk tags in hand.  South is on a roll so far this year, and with the way things are going, I wouldn't be surprised if he fills both tags.

Best of luck to you South!

Aloha!
Ryan

Those are two beautiful bucks. Gotta love the velvet seasons. Wish we had them this way.
The essence of the hunt for me is to enter nature and observe+ return safely occasionally with the gift of a life taken.

Got an email from South detailing the hunt...that guy could sneak up on his own shadow I think. Way to go South and Kyri! I am off to WY in 2 days to put his Stalker to the test against those mulies...now if I could just convince my wife Lynnette to spot for me  :)

Howzit Bruddah Curt!
Hope you and Cade have another great season together!

Here's a link to a cool video of South shooting a mature doe in Iowa with one of his Recurves.  It's the video that's on his website.

Ryan, can you post a pic of South's bear? It looks like a grizzled ol' veteran of the bear wars. I'm enjoying my Stalker recurve and appreciate South keeping me in the loop with his hunts.

Awesome!!!  Two beautiful bucks and a gorgeous color phase bear!!!
To me, the ultimate challenge in bowhunting is not how far away you can succesfully make a killing shot but rather how close you can get to the animal before shooting.
