Alas, no bear for me but had bears in almost every time I sat. I made some poor shots and some poor shot placement. Both bears I shot at will recover but will be much wiser. I'll post later about each event.

This guy knew there was a bigger bear nearby I think. The Outfitter Gary Haight said that was what they do when they get whooped at the bait. It is amazing that they can hear other bears coming as quet as they are.

This was my 1st fly away hunt. We were picked up at the airport in Lewiston and started our way toward to mountains after a good nights sleep in Kamiah. That's where the fog pictures were taken.

Once in camp some two hours or so later, we went about getting moved in and our bows set up again. We had a roomy tent with a wood floor and a wood stove.

The camp has two functional out houses and a camp shower. Water is heated by the cook stove in the mess tent and used in the shower via gravity. Over all the camp was very comfortable and the food was incredible!

Gary, the outfitter assigned me the bait up the road from camp about a 1/4. I had bears in every night except the last.

I have so many incredible memories crammed into that week it is hard to remember what happened when.

I believe it was the third night that I was watching "boo boo" the yearling.
I was standing behind a large stump. I looked to my left and a biggerbear was coming in! There I was just standing out in the open. They can't see all that well so I just froze.

I looked toward the bait and Boo boo was gone. Subordinate bears have a sixth sense about them when it comes to bigger bears. It is amazing how stealthy they are. I got to where I used Booboo as a watch dog but he let me down on this occasion. The bigger bear came waddling in and started letting out a low grunt... "oouhh oouhh oouhhh". I looked at the bait and Booboo was gone.

I decided to try for this bear.

I've always heard of buck fever but never truely experienced it. I had become more relaxed being on the ground with the bears but when I decided to shoot this bear I got the shakes and i could actually hear my heartbeat in my ears.

I tried to calm myself and stepped out from behind my stump. The bait was 10-12ish yards away. I had a broadside shot but there was an 8" log laying three feet my side of the bear. The bear was laying down with his head in the bait hole. This left a narrow verticle window for me to shoot through. The bear was up and down checking for bigger bears.

I came to full draw at least 5-6 times. The bear would look up at me and I had to just hold where I was, 1/2 draw, 3/4. I was shaking like a dog passing peach seeds by now! How could that bear not see me?!?

It got to the point that I had to sink back behind that stump and take a break! I took deep breaths and tried to calm down. I've never felt this shook up before! I kept telling myself that it was only 10 yards and that I could do this!

I picked up my bow and stepped back out. The bear raised up and I picked my spot. I drew to anchor and released. The arrow flew perfectly...

A couple more pics until Jim gets back.

If you are gonna hunt from the ground you need to shoot from the ground.
