My primitive hunting setup for this deer season!
« on: August 31, 2010, 09:51:00 AM »
Well after spending countless hours on the Bowyers bench and searching every thread that I could find here along with many other resources and a ton of help from The Gang I have managed to finish my primitive setup for the upcoming bow season.

Osage character bow pulling 47# at 28" that I finished about a month ago.

Tonkin cane shafts with turkey feather and goose feather fletching from birds that I took. Stone heads made by one of our own, Bill Skinner And A nice simple plains style quiver made by me from deer skin.

Wish me luck guys it should be a journey in it's self.

I will also be hunting with my Striker slapstick but I really hope to get a chance at the big boy I seen last year and have seen this year as well with this rig.

 Stiks
Striker stinger 58" 55# @ 28
any wood bow I pick off the rack.

Awesome...good luck

Nice looking set-up

The quest to improve is so focused on a few design aspects & compensating for hunter ineptness as to actually have reduced a bow & arrow’s effectiveness. Nothing better demonstrates this than mech. BHs & speed fixated designs

Stiks.
Good luck with that set up. To me it's the ultimate challenge. I really like the equipment you've made. One of my goals in the not so distant future. I hope. Any harvest with primitive equipment is truly a trophy.  Thanks for sharing.

That is an awesome looking set up.  Simple and effective.  I hope to be using the same kind of equipment next year or the year after.

Stiks, love to see more pics of the selfbow. I am working on my first. It is a juniper stave. I am just starting to tiller it now that it is shaped. What did you put on it for a finish? Good hunting!

Very cool!!!  Good luck!
To me, the ultimate challenge in bowhunting is not how far away you can succesfully make a killing shot but rather how close you can get to the animal before shooting.

Total primitive is something I have always wanted to do.
All I need to do is:
-Fell a suitable osage tree, split a stave, and learn how to chase a ring.
-Learn how to flint knap
-Dry some sinew, from a deer I killed myself.
-Collect some river cane and make some arrows.
-Fletch arrows with feathers from a wild turky I killed myself.
I better get started!!

Snag, I used deft satin wood finish You can see some good pics of the bow in the bowyers bench.

The only thing I didn't harvest or make was the heads and shafts. Bil Skinner made the heads which are awsome and fly great and I bought the Tonkin cane shafts from Primalneedarchery. David sent me some real good ones.

I plan on learning how to do a little knapping this winter so maybe next year I will be using my own heads.

...I have killed many now .."primitive"  The first was a Ohio Button buck (20 some years ago) ..I hit him high but dropped him with a spine shot... I WAS SO PROUD !!! Stone point and short selfbow 60# @ 22 " draw. Last year I shot my biggest Ohio Primitive Deer with stone point.... 8 point Ohio Buck. Hit him @12 yards ..past through both lungs. He wen't about 40 yards if I recall. Yes You will get hooked... But what a ride it will be ...Jeff
