Need tips for arrows to a heavy bow (80#)!
« on: September 07, 2010, 04:16:00 PM »
Hi!
I have a Black Douglas AMO 64" ca 80#31 incoming.
And need some advice:

This bow is probably superfast maybe same effect as a 87-89# BW or like.

Regarding my long drawlength I was wondering what I should use for arrows.

300 spine fmj with 100 grain insert and 300 up front would give ca 825 grains of total?

If this is to weak or should I just build out the sideplate?

When shooting this heavy with my drawlength I don't need to shot with to weak spine..

Or should I go for the Easton fmj 250 spine dangerous game that is super stiff?

Same weights up front gives a total weight of ca 1000 grains and since I`m not hunting T-62 tanks I think this is way on the heavy side.

Not sure if I will hunt with this bow yet, first I need to test it to see how confident and accurate I will be with something so heavy, but tuning is a start  :archer:

So if you have some experience or opinions about arrows please let me know.

Margly: I suspect that the 250 spine is the way to go. I used to shoot the 300 spine out of bows 66-70# with  a 29" arrow and 225 grains up front. I think that 300 would be too weak for  you as you describe the arrow you would like to end up with.

Yes I guess so to, I need at least 800 grains of arrow, but since I`ll use the new triple spine carbon riser I need to build it out a bit and are unsecure about which way to go.

If I could use something in the 800 area I`ll also get more speed.

I did read dr. Ashby`s report and I do understand that the doc did build out the sideplate much to gain the uefoc, so maybe it is secure to shoot something this heavy at long drawlength if you build out enough?

I concur...and you will likely need to build out your side plate some too. Also stay away from the skinny shafts (beman MFX, Easton Axis, etc.) as they will only make the shaft act weaker.

The quest to improve is so focused on a few design aspects & compensating for hunter ineptness as to actually have reduced a bow & arrow’s effectiveness. Nothing better demonstrates this than mech. BHs & speed fixated designs

I used 105/110# Douglas fir from Surewood Shafts for 83# @ 29" Silvertip. My arrows were 30" long and wore 160 grain points and heads. I also used a thicker piece of leather on the strike plate. They weighed 750 grains.

Another option is to use the GoldTip arrows with their screw-in rear-end weight system, allowing you to add extra weight at the rear of the shaft which stiffens it right up.

I build my personal bows to mid 80#'s plus and have always done well with the 7595 gold tips. Install a 100g brass insert, and a 300g head will give you an overall weight of around 775g. They shoot exceptionally well for me and I have a 30" + draw. I have been able to bare shaft these to 30+ yards. Lately, I have also been shooting an Arrow Dynamics Hammerhead heavyweight and they have been shooting real well too. They tip the scales about 800g.
We sell the gold tips in blems and both shafts in  1/2 doz if you would like to try some.

I have a Black Douglas Hex4 55 lb and shoot 75/95 out of it..at my 28" draw arrows bare shaft at 29 3/4" total weight 560 grains so I would start with full lengh 250 spine arrows and bare shaft... you will more than likley have to add weight in rear of arrow ,...to get everything to work ...once you go black douglas you will never go back....

Arky714- I have no doubt that you are getting those to fly well for you, but that is not the norm. I sell tons of gold tips and have found that most guys shooting under 30"s need to shoot at least 62lbs and full length plus a bunch of weight up front to make these come even close to flying correctly.

BigJim that is the 75/95 black gold tip...The traditional 75/95 for my bow are cut 31" with 300 grains up front total 650 grains...for my 55 lb black douglas...I THINK THE TRADITIONAL 75/95 spine about 300 where the black 75/95 spine about 340...the border bows are cut way past center...makes you need a way stiffer arrow than normal

"The aim was right, but the target moved"

Isn't that the explanation for the Edsel failure on the market?   :D
