2010 Maine bear hunt "live"
« on: September 09, 2010, 08:07:00 PM »
I'm headed to Kelly's camp in Allagash, Maine for a week on saturday. I have a long flight from Chattanooga Tn. I am going to try to post every day with pics if possible. I finished packing tonight. I am taking my self built 60" 59# take down recurve. Action wood desert camo riser with brown fiberglass limbs. I wrapped it with camo cloth because of it's gloss finish. I have one copperhead skin and plan on skinning it when I come by another. For now the wrap will have to do. I will be shooting cx maxis 350 with brass inserts and magnus stinger 125 grain heads.
They have had a good season so far it seems. Wish me luck!

Bonebuster: I just got back from  a hunt not too far from where Red is going. The mosquitoes were non existent while hunting. Good luck, in any event. Nothing like a Maine bear hunt to kick off the season.

Allagash and Kellys' camps are my favorite place in the whole State. You are in for a great hunt with some of the nicest people you will ever meet. Beautiful country and big woods.I'll be up there bird hunting next month. Have a fun hunt and keep us posted. Not sure about wireless service but not much cell phone reception up there.

Well the adventure stars, I just left the Chattanooga airport headed for Maine. Three flights and 12 hrs later I will be be there.
This is my 40th birthday present. I figured I would start on my bucket list as early as I could. It's a long list, probably won't check off the whole list, but Im going to try. Checked of a triathlon this summer and now a bear hunt.
When I booked my flight I overlooked the fact that today is 9/11.Its the first time I have been padded down by hand at the airport. I'm sure security will be on edge. I will say a special prayer for those who lost lives or loved ones. God bless us here in the US for being able to travel and hunt, we sometimes take our basic freedoms for granted.

I arrive in camp at 10:00 pm after leaving my house at 4:00am this morning. Saw two moose on the ride in from the airport and three bears being cleaned at camp that were taken today. The biggest was 185 lb.. The cabin is really nicer than I expected, and Wade and his guides greeted me and made me feel right at home. Wade, the operator is a traditional shooter also and said a couple more trad shooters are due in in the morning. It' will be nice to have trad brothers in camp. I was tiered from the trip, so a quick shower and get ready for bed. Looking forward to tomorrow.

Wade came to the cabin and said he's got a bait for me set up for a traditional shooter. Boy was he right. Awesome cover, 10 yards to the bait. Just a picture size hole thru the trees to the bait. The bait was hit and empty when we got there, it was freshened up Sunday. The guide freshened it up again and my first day on a bear hunt was on. Light rain on and of temps in the 50's. The red squirrels had a UFC cage match most of the night in the barrel. I saw no bears, but it was nice to be back in the woods after a long hot summer. The weather was't the best. A few bears seen by the other hunters but not many. One of the gun hunters, Jack, killed a 205 lb. boar. Well maybe better tomorrow for us bow hunters.

good luck. I had a great time hunting bears in western part of Maine near Rangeley. Be patient and enjoy the woods!!!!!!

Had a nice size boar stand on the bottom of my ladder stand and huff at me. Good thing I went to the bathroom before leaving for the stand site!!!!!!!!!

They have a stand called 3 arrows named after me. A very persistent bear and a very frustrated longbow hunter. I actually wasn't expecting to have such a close shot of < than 10 yards.

Missed 3 times over his back. The 3rd time he finally left. Bad thing is it was all caught on film  :(
