2010 Utah Mule Deer Hunt

I had a great season for Mule Deer, saw lots of bucks and made some great stalks, this one ending in success. I found this deer feeding on an oak brush hillside about 300 yards away. With a quick check of the wind the stalk began. Just then the clouds burst and the rain started to fall, I kept up with the stalk and ended up within shooting range of this buck. He was standing in some tall grass, I could see his body and had a good shooting lane. Not sure what happened from there but I botched the shot and the arrow took him just under his left eye... He didn´t go much farther. I was staring at my first Pope and Young buck with a recurve. Sometimes arrow placement and the hunt doesn´t go as planned. I would love say that I double lunged him and hit him perfect, but I didn't and am very glad the buck expired quickly and the situation turned out in my favor. I was shooting a Wes Wallace Mentor takedown, 56 lbs @ 28 inches. Gold tip arrow and a mangus buzzcut 125 grain head, total arrow weight 520 grains. Good hunting to you all this coming fall.

Thanks for the positive comments on the post. It was a tough one deciding to post or not because of the shot outcome. I guess there are some understanding tradgangers out there after all, thanks again.

Fantastic buck! Congratulations, and great job on the stalk:thumbsup: In my mind, stalking an animal is by far the most exciting way of hunting, and one of the toughest.
So often shots that don't go as intended don't end up with results like that - sure glad it did for you.

Wow! Now that's a BIG deer. Look at the body on that bruiser. Congratulations on a fine mule deer. Thanks for sharing. I'm sure every one has a shot or two they're not proud of. At least you were able to recover your trophy.

Beautiful buck! **** happens sometimes but at least there was no wounding or loss of such a wonderful animal.

That is a brute of a muley! You have worked hard for that trophy, not just this season. The wilderness and the hunt is never perfect, that is the adventure of it. Perseverance is paramount in bowhunting. Congrats on a great trophy!
