I'm in, we have the stands up and my broadheads are sharp.  I'm ready, hunting near Brook Park the first few weekends.

Our deer population is way up in the neighborhood and we have been seeing a much higher ratio of does to bucks this year including three that would be "buck of a lifetime" animals. Last thing my oldest daughter said when she left for her senior year of college last week was that she wanted a bunch of lean protein for her apartment freezer. First doe that comes by next weekend is going to the cause. Be safe in your treestands!

ok what an exciting first morning.

I left the yurt at 5:30 am and made the short hike across the road and up the steep  bluff . i have a new ladder location near the top of the bluff. Its very steep but  three old logging roads converge here and  the deer traffic is amazing.

20 yards from my stand 2 deer run off in the dark. Darn!

At 7 am a nice 8 point is coming down the upper logging road, unfortunately, i am a little rusty in the tree stand and get caught moving.

one our later i see several sets up legs coming down the same trail. Three huge does and one buck fawn are on a direct path past my stand.

The first doe looks up and sees me and spooks.
Doe #2 stops not knowing what's up. I try to start my draw and slip on the wet stand and nearly loose my balance. Needless to say the deer didn't stay put for that!

After another 1/2 hour i decide this stand is on too steep of a slope and too near the trail. After lunch it will get moved about 35 yards down and to the right. just below the intersection the logging road bends hard to left. here is a better tree about 15 yards from the trail. i will move the ladder there and let the area cool off for a week.

I grouse hunted this morning on a popular State Forest a short drive north of the twin cities and in two hours flushed 20 grouse and 2 woodcock. Very little hunting pressure based on the number of vehicles at parking areas. Heading out to the stand about 3PM for the years first deer hunt.

Sat pm found me in a new stand but all i saw were turkeys! no tag for them either.   today was spent caping and butchering a big 13 point my nephew killed with his compound. Guess he has to scout for me the rest of the year!

no hunting for me tomorrow, got to be away for a day but then back at it tuesday.

how about a report from the rest of you MN trad gangers?

Spent the afternoon Saturday near Hinckley.  Got set up on the downwind side of a field with lots of sign. I was sitting in my asat leafy suit in the brush.   At about 1830 I hear a twig snap behind me (downwind).  So I wait and hear a bit more deer sounds and finally, I have to look.  I turn my head as slow as I can.  Maybe 20 feet behind me are 2 does looking at me, I freeze, but I'm busted.  Must have been at least 6, maybe more.  Apparently, I was on the trail they wanted to use.  At least I was almost in the right place.  The swamp is really full of water and I think they've changed travel patterns.  I'll be back with a better plan next weekend.

This will be my first trip home during deer season I will not be bringing my bow.... :(   Have some priorities that need tending too.

Dont know how much time I'll have but if you're near the cities give me a holler, maybe we can get out for lunch somewhere.

Although my profile says NC, I originate from northern Mn, but my career as a Marine has kept me from hunting there more years than I like to think about. I wish you all the best hunting. Next year if all goes well, I will be hunting Mn for the first time in 15 years, can't wait.

I passed up on a small buck Saturday night and a yearling doe last night .

Last night an older gentleman on an adjoining  property hit a yearling doe that I will be helping him blood trail this morning.

A teenager home for opening weekend from college hunting 200 yards north of my stand shot a nice 8 point buck that his father and I helped blood trail and recover.  It was a busy Sunday evening in the neighborhood!

Passed on a button buck Tuesday night. I am a meat hunter and it was tough to pass him up. It was pretty warm and I mainly didn't want to have to deal with processing him in the warm weather.
