Need A Longbow Expert To Help Me.......
« on: May 18, 2007, 07:21:00 PM »
Just got home with a "new to me" longbow...It's a Custom Legend Longbow by Jim Johnson...Marked 62" 52# @ 27"...Jan '97...Just the right weight and length for a little guy like me...

I think I paid a (fair) price for it...Just over four hundred clams... ...But I need to know:

Proper Brace Height?
Type Of String- FF or Dacron?
Did I Get Taken?
Anything Else You Feel I Should Know.

Thank You So Much For Any Info!!!

... mike ... aka: "Knows Doodle Bout Longbows"

PS...Can't post pictures, but this bow is clean and in great shape.

I have 2 custom made Legend longbows.  I have the brace height set around 7 1/8 from back of shelf.  Mine were made in 01 or 02 and will use either FF or dacron.  Not sure about one from 97 but I would expect it would be. I use FF.  They are very good shooting bows and I think you will really like it after you get it set up.  Good shooting and have fun.

mcgroundstalker: If this is the Jim Johnson I think it is. Jim Johnson from Texas that made  Legend Longbows. He did some fine work was reasonably priced around 350.00 to 400.00 back around 10years or so ago.He wasn't around that long. I'm almost positive that's all he made was regular "d" longbows. I spoke to him on the phone and he sent me  one of his pamplets .I might still have it around in my draw I'll have to check for you. Does it still have the leather grip on it? I beleive the brace height was 6 3/4 to 7 1/4.Try around 7"s and go from there. He used real pretty woods too.Hopefully someone else will chime in.Is there a string on it now?You can probably tell the difference between fast flight and b-50. I would go with the b-50 but the limb tips are probably reinforced for fast flight. Can you do some pictures of it?

I've got one. I still have the paperwork from Jim. It's Jim Johnson in New Bloomfield, MO. Brace height is 6 1/2 to 7 1/8" and my 1999 legend longbow with carbon core came from Jim With a 450+ string.

Thanks For The Info!!!...Even you Skipp... ...

Sorry that I can't post pictures...I'm still in the dark with this PC stuff...Well I shot this bow in the back yard and love it!...Gonna have to get some matched arrows though...It seems to like my 550 grain carbons but not the 475 gr 2016s...I KNOW I SHOULD BE SHOOTING WOOD!!!...I will be soon enough... :) ...

Looks like a fast flight string and yes the leather grip is still on the bow...(found under a Wilson wrap)...

I'm One Happy Camper...And Maybe A Longbow Convert...Just Maybe... :p ...

Thanks Again

Hey Mike---  I would start with a brace around 7" and go from there-------If you can't tune it you could always make a lean too---LOL...good luck--------------Mark
