KME Sharpening System. Is it really that good?
« on: September 20, 2010, 10:03:00 AM »
Ok.
Looking to get a sharpening system and am strongly leaning towards the KME knife sharpening system. That way I can do knives and broadheads with one system. Is it really as good as everyone seems to say and if you have had any issues please let me know. Of course only constructive criticizms, no bashing.

Best that I've ever used. My wife was giving me a hard time last night because I was putting the finishing touches on my knife and broadheads and I had shave most of the hair off my right calf testing the edge. Never could get them that sharp in the past!

I really like them.  I have a knife that is just awesome but is made out of hte hardest steel I have ever seen.  No one could get it sharp.  After a while with KME, it is near surgical sharpness!

I am also pretty rotten with broad heasds.  My Stos and Magnus for my wood arrows are real sharp now.  So I figure, if Ican make sharp stuff with them, anyone with a pulse can do it.

I have the KME broadhead sharpener and I know it's great! So, based on it and everyone's response here, I'd say go for it.

Ron will tell you that "the others" can get the job done too.  He is much too humble.

The KME system is great (head and shoulders above the others), and you get Ron too!

How many use the knife sharpener for broadheads and will the broadhead sharpener work on the stones that come with the knife sharpener or do you need larger stones for it to be effective.

The KME IS really that good.  You would not regret it.  The knife sharpener will do broadheads as well.

before you buy - talk to Ron.  He may steer you toward one or the other depending on what you want to sharpen.  Certain BH's are better with the knife sharpener.  Oh heck, be like me and have BOTH!!!!!

Get the deluxe with the pedestal stand.

Will do all your knife and 2 blade broadheads razor sharp once you get the "feel" for the extra fine diamond stone!

I've used the Lansky sharpening systems since they came out and have generally been satisfied.  I do not own the KME, but from what I've researched they appear to be an improved Lansky-style system, with the operative word here being improved. Lansky's have pre-cut slots in their clamps limiting your choice of angles to 17, 20, 25, and 30 degrees. This may or may not match up closely with the factory (or desired) grind of your knife/broadhead, meaning you may have some metal to remove.  KME's appear to be infinitely adjustable within roughly that range, a significant advantage in my opinion. I have a complete set of Lansky conventional and diamond stones and recently ordered an additional pedestal and T-clamp.  I was very unimpressed that the tolerances of these parts were sloppier than my originals with 25 years of use! The clamp wobbles around so badly, I won't use it. (how hard can it be to drill a hole the correct diameter?) I contacted the company and never heard a word. I get the impression that it would probably be a shock to their customer service dept. that sportsmen might buy their products.  KME knows its customer base! Ron, aka Sharpster, cruises this site all the time and is more than happy to help you with sharpening issues related to his products or anybody elses, for that matter.  That's priceless.  I don't have to tell you where my next dollars will be spent.  If I've misspoken on anything here, somebody that owns both is welcome to clear it up.  Just my 2 cents.

I always had trouble geting a BH sharp enough, but with the KME system, it is relatively easy. Word of caution, though. Don't bear down too hard. Use light even strokes for a superior result.
