Last night (Sunday) was part of a doe only hunt here in Michigan, any weapon allowed. It lasts about 4-5 days. I went out and decided to bowhunt.
I sat on a hedge row and was enjoying a nice evening and got busted by a couple of different doe groups because I must smell like a pile of trash to them! They are always sneezing at me. Anyway, there are so many deer around that you just can't tell where and when they will travel through and the wind wasn't steady so it makes it tough, especially from the ground. I just do the best I can.
Suddenly I hear a gunshot up the row and my grip tightens a bit on the longbow. Then I hear the thundering of feet coming toward me. 2 small deer pass and then an adult runs in front of me at no more than 10 feet full sprint. She darts to her right (on my right side) and clears the hedge row about 8-10 yds away. As she rounds the pine stand at full stride I stretch my neck and see my arrow is sticking out, quartering away and through the chest!
I am not one to normally shoot a running deer, but there it was. A 30 yd recovery and good blood trail. Not bad.
But when I looked closer I saw guts protruding out below my arrow which was quartering forward through both lungs. The gunshot I heard put a bullet clean through the paunch with a 300 Mag. I found the hunter floundering for a sign or blood trail and told him I shot his deer and he was very thankful. Little did he know how thankful I was that he accepted it back! STANKY!
So although I was disappointed that it was stinky and tainted, at least the guy gutted it (I helped a little...gag) and took it home. I patted myself on the back both for that shot and for taking the wounded deer down (although unknowingly). I smile every time I replay it in my mind!!
So what shots have you made that were rediculous looking back??
