Tuning an old recurve?
« on: May 20, 2007, 03:41:00 PM »
Pulled out my old Ben Pearson "Hunter" given to me by my father almost 35-years ago.  The bow is marked as 45# at 28"(58" AMO).  I put a new string on it but the brace seems height seems short.  Can anyone tell me what it should be?  Currently it measures about 5-7/8" from the string to the back of the riser/shelf and 7" to the center of the riser/shelf.

The bow is in pretty good condition considering its age.  Limbs are straight and true.  I would like to start shooting it again and maybe even hunt with it IF I can master it.

Thanks,

Usually I find the older bows need a brace of 7 1/2- 8 1/4". I have several 58" grizzlys and keep the brace at 8". If you have a flemish string twisting it will bring the brace up, probably can do with the black nylon as well( I think-don't Quote me on that). Recurve strings are generally 4" shorter than AMO-54" should do it. B50 stretches more than FF so you should keep an eye on it.
The other thing I do is install new rug/striker plate-just to prevent any arrow grooves.
Good luck and enjoy that old bow!!
The essence of the hunt for me is to enter nature and observe+ return safely occasionally with the gift of a life taken.
