50's style recurves
« on: September 23, 2010, 07:58:00 PM »
I don't really have the answer but I really shoot this style bow better than anything else.
I have two BW PSR's and a Sky TDX 15 w/Black Max Carbon limbs that looks like a 50's style recurve and I really love the way I'm shooting them. My longbows are surely jealous.
I quess we all have bows that seem to work with us better than others. I know it's not the bow, but it's unexplainable I think.

RER makes one as well.

I'm a longbow man. '50s style recurves are the only 'curves I can shoot worth a hoot. With me, it's the low-wrist grip more than anything.

I have a Chad Holm bow with a 50's style grip, real nice and a good shooter also. Check out Holm-Made bows....

I also have a Chad Holm recurve.  Great looking and great shooting.  He is a sponsor here if you want to take a look.

I shoot a Great Northern Ghost and absolutely love it!  I'm a fan of the 50s style recurves too.  It makes it a little easier to transition to shooting longbows as well.

They certainly are great shooting, they are rather un-sung these days.  You don't need to explain why you like yours, just enjoy them!

I too love the lines of a 50s style recurve.  I shot the PSR a bunch at Kzoo rendezvous and at BW during the GFA shooting clinic I attended.  I loved the lines but it just didn't "sing" to me.

When I went to Compon Rend. I saw one that did.  A 54" Mariah made by Mike Dunaway at Wild Horse Creek Bows.  I just received it a few weeks ago and have been shooting it almost every day since. It sings to me... real purdy like.

50's curves are great. I have a '57 kodiak that is my favorite next to HH big 5's. I think the grip on 50's style recurves makes them a pretty easy transition if you already shoot a longbow.

Check out Whisperstikbows.com for some great looking customs that fit that style if you like them.  J.D. will make one to you specs brand new and affordable.  He does some great work with great turnaround as well.

I have a Chaparral Alpine recurve that really spits an arrow. Unfortunately, I need to sell some stuff to pay for a brake job on the truck, so this one has to go.

I love the lines of the 50's and 60's recurves also. When I was shown how to build a bow that is the design I built.

Yeah, I also think it's the grip. For me, who is constantly switching back and forth from recurve to longbow, it makes the transition easy. Mine are: a 56" Roger Hollenbeck, a 60" Kodiak replica by Jim Martin of Mahantango Custom Bows, and a 60" Tri-State Archery Wildcat.

Do you think it's the fact 50's style recurve are not as fancy as other recurves, takedowns with larger risers, that these bows don't get the attention they should.
