Opening day this year fell on a full moon. The temperature had dropped about 30 degrees between Friday and Saturday and we had some pretty high winds. Not the best of conditions but it's opening day so any conditions are good ones.
There was nothing moving all morning so Mike (Arrow K9) and I took a break for lunch. We came back out for the afternoon hunt and Mike had a bit of action when a doe came up the hill and winded him at about 5:00. I was getting blown around pretty good in my tree until about 7 pm when the winds died down. A few minutes later I heard deer trotting through the woods and a big doe, button buck, and a six point came walking out into the field. The six point and the button buck dropped back into the woods and the six point gave me a good shot but I was interested in the doe. They all walked back out into the field then around behind me and into the trees. Usually when they do that they're moving on to another field so I turned back around to watch for other deer. A few minutes later I had "that" feeling and glanced over my shoulder to see the six and button buck walking right to the base of my tree five yards out. The doe was off to my right about 15 yards walking into the woods. I had to turn and twist to get into a shooting position to my right but I got there just as she was entering an opening in the brush. I let the arrow fly and watched the fletching disappear through her lungs. She ran off and the other two looked at her then went back to feeding. They stood directly underneath my stand until dark when Mike showed up to help track the doe.
The picture is not the best since we took it in the dark with my cell phone right after we got done dragging her out of the brush. The bow was a 53# JD Berry Taipan that I sprayed green and brown to eliminate reflection, Heritage 150's, and a Grizzly 190 head. Another fine opening day in Ohio.
