Went out today to check on a few stands with a buddy.  Saw a half dozen rubs on smaller trees and as many newly-started scrapes.  They're b-a-a-a-c-c-k!!!

I think location has alot to do with it, I live in northern South Dakota and always find rubs the first or second week in September, back behind my house they have been tearing up the small trees for several weeks now.

In August I found a spot about 20' in diameter where just about every tree had big scrapes on it. Saw two small bucks nearby.

Finding rubs early in the season is more an indicator of the bucks age than a measure of earlier/later deer patterns.  Could be that if you've seen rubs earlier this year, the buck/bucks that are calling that area their core area have simply aged some.
Unfortunately here in northern Wisconsin it's a different story.  Took a 2hr. hike this past Monday and saw "ZERO" deer sign much less rubs.  I did however see multiple wolf traps set by our DNR for study purposes and the advisory note to not let your dogs on that stretch of road because of the traps.  I don't even feel right killing a deer this year with how few of them we have.
