helical or straight fletch for hunting arrows
« on: September 29, 2010, 11:28:00 PM »
I am trying to figure out how many of us use helical fletch; and how many use straight fletch on hunting arrows.

Brian,

My votes are in the minority camp - offset straight, four 4".
My arrows with the broadheads that I shoot (STOS, Ace 160 and Grizzly) fly fine.  I can see plenty of spin as they go toward the target, so I don't find the need to change to helical.  I don't see much helical in a 4" fletch and I can usually cut two from a feather, thus I stay with what works for me.

In the minority camp too, I shoot straight feathers 4 X 4" or 3 X 5" and all my arrows flight straight with Zwickey Delta.

Three 5 1/2 inch hard helical.

I think a straight fletch would be a little more quiet, but I want the extra stabilization I get from this setup cuz I'm shooting a big 160 grain Snuffer.

Three 4" helical for me.  No problems so far.

I shoot helical.
I don't REALLY know if it helps.
It's the only way I've ever had trad arrows made.

I shoot helical with 3, 5" feathers and I think it helps to stabilize broadheads in flight when encountering a good crosswind.

The last two batches I fletched were helical, but I'm using 4" fletches and don't see a difference between helical and straight/offset in terms of flight or accuracy.

I think we have variables here; that would be point design, distance, crosswind and pull weight.
