Question for Knappers.........
«

My wife likes to cover the tops of coffee and end tables with 1/4" glass to protect the table surface from kids and grandkids.
I was rummaging through our storage unit and accidentally broke a piece which covered a Large coffee table. Now have a lot of 1/4" glass in various sizes available for a much more practical use, such as Knapped blades and heads. (For what She pays for this glass I really hate to just throw it away)
Will it make decent hunting heads? It is 1/4" thick and clear when you look through it but green when looking at the edge. Just wondering if it will work or if maybe it could be to brittle. Figure it has to be as strong or maybe stronger than a beer bottle bottom.
Anyone have any experience with this stuff?

As long as it's not tempered glass it will knap, I had some blue stained glass about the same thickness an I used a pressure flaker an got a few nice heads. I don't like to use percussion on that thin of material. I also cut some of this type material in to triangle first with glass cutter an then pressure flaked. Alot less waste this way. Later Bob

By your description of the size of the
(dangereous), broken pieces, it's not tempered, but annealed.
It will make a good head.
I have some luck pressure flaking 3/8" thick annealed glass.
I strongly suggest you replace it with tempered safety glass, to protect the kids and grandkids. :D

It's definitely not tempered safety glass. And She has another piece about 4.25'x3' which she recently told me to dispose of since it no longer fits on anything she owns. So I guess I've got plenty of material to keep me busy for a while. She doesn't know about the piece I broke YET!

They'll look mighty nice leading those Hot Pink feathers to a critter! :D

My boss got a shelf somewhere with a ton of glass shelves(Like those in a medicine cabinet). He wasn't using the glass that goes with the unit,so I got some of the pieces, busted them and got free material for Knapping practice.Great for pressure flaking. It didn't like percussion flaking at all,as it was 1/4" thick.
I made 2 heads out of some of it,My first two. They didn't come out the best but it's a start, and a free one at that.I read that glass is best to start with becuase it is man made and more consistent than obsidian.

Vtmtnman,
Have you shot any of your points? How well did they hold up if you have?
I'll be starting on mine next weekend, Gotta install an automatic awning over the deck for my wife first.

I have not used any.I'm still in the learning process myself. Those were a winter thing that took a side street when spring came around.I'll be picking it back up once the white stuff hits the ground.
Would like to use some next year to take a deer with(Glass or actual stone).I'm slowly checking off my hunting bucket list items year by year.
