Was hunting Somerset County which is western PA for opening day. Walking in before light I jumped two deer from under my stand which I thought was going to be bad luck. At about 8am I see a spike buck come across the ridge and go right past where I was going to put my stand which started me second guessing my stand placement. I was convinced that after the morning hunt I was going to put my stand where I wanted to put it instead of listening to my Dad and Tony. Well I wasn't even through with that thought when three deer came across the ridge right towards me. So I stand up and turn towards the three deer when I hear more movement coming up behind me. I turn slightly and see three more deer coming up behind me. So I wait for all six deer to be in front of or under my stand before I drew on one doe quartering away from me. As soon as I started to draw that same spike buck I saw earlier somehow snuck up behind me and spooked the six doe before I even shot.
So I sat back down cussin myself for letting that buck sneak in but at the same time thankin Dad and Tony for talkin me into my stand placement! :D About fifteen minutes later three more deer come across the ridge and go right under my stand. As they get on the other side I took my first shot and missed at about eight yards. That deer kept goin down the over the ridge unconcerned that I just shot at her. So I knocked another arrow and convinced myself to calm down and just pick a spot. Se was quartering pretty hard and when I shot it went in high in the back angled down to where the broadhead came out. It wasn't the best shot but it's my first trad kill and I couldn't be happier.
And I guess the old men have been hunting alot longer then I have so maybe I shouldn't second guess them!
