Friend's "Moose" Email
« on: October 04, 2010, 02:37:00 PM »
I have a buddy up in Bangor, Maine that is probably about as excited as me about my upcoming moose hunt.

Anyhow, he sends me an email telling me that he has my "cow" all ready for me and all I have to do is get up to Maine this weekend in time for the Monday opener.  Ya gotta love that Maine sense of humor!!!!

I replied to his email noting that it was a bit on the "small" side!!!!

Jeff,

Thanks much for the wishes!  I just have to find a cooperative moose and then do my part!!!

Those "Mainiacs" sure do have a strange sense of humor, but he is a great friend and always has the best of intentions.  His idea of moose hunt preparations is to just bring a cannon and a chainsaw!  Of course he thinks I'm a bit "off" for taking one on with a recurve.  I need to send him the link to Biggie's moose thread so he can see actual outcomes of moose vs. stick bows!!!

Good luck.  Hoping to draw a tag some day myself.  The north woods re a great place.  Enjoy it!  Bring some small game heads.  The grouse are supposed to be thick up in the north woods this year.
The season gave him perfect mornings, hunter's moons and fields of freedom found only by walking them with a predator's stride.

How many years have you been applying?

Hey Tony!  Take lots of pictures, and please, please, please when you kill your moose, don't keep us in suspense with the story!
How many years did you have to apply?  Did you buy "extra" chances for the lottery? How many non-resident permits are given out?  Sorry for all the questions....
Good luck to you sir!

Randy,

I've been applying for 17 years in a row, but as I recall, they didn't start awarding bonus points until sometime in the late 90s.  No real preference from them....just another "chance" in the drawing.  I actually applied about 2 or 3 years previous to that 17 year run, but skipped a year or two then.

As I recall, I usually bought 3 groups of 10 chances since they've been allowing that.  Essentially 30 chances plus the bonus points chances that I accumulated.  I think a NR can buy as many groups of 10 chances that you are willing to spend the money on!

They allocate 10% of the available permits in each WMD to non-residents.  This year there was a total of around 3140 permits, so all of us non-residents were competing for 314 permits.  In years gone by, there were a lot less permits available, so competition was really tough, since I guess that a similar number of NR folks apply each year.

Just like playing Lotto!
