First "Trad" Deer (Edited with photo)
« on: October 04, 2010, 09:24:00 PM »
What an awesome day! Been hunting Land Between the Lakes here in Western Kentucky pretty heavy since last Friday morning. Seen lots of deer sign, one coyote, and 4 turkeys (oh, and about a quarter zillion squirrels). Last night, I decided to take another vacation day and try it again this morning. I had just arrived at my ground blind,(well past daylight since I had forgotten my knife and had to return to the truck for it) when I saw a deer heading in my general direction about 80 or 90 yards out. Turned out there were 3 smallish does. As they got onto range, one gave me a quartering away shot. I picked a spot, released and watched the arrow disappear in the kill zone.  She didn't go but maybe 40 yards or so when she piled up on the other side of the dry creek bed- but just out of my sight. I waited the obligatory 30 minutes and then headed out. First I found the arrow- it was a pass-through. Didn't take long to find her- definitely a clean kill. I guess though that the icing on the cake for the whole hunt though was that the cedar arrow that I shot was tipped with the one broadhead that I have somehow held on to since I was  kid. It had belonged to my dad- who passed away over thirty years ago when I was about 16. It's an old MA3L. I decided that I am going to retire it again now though- probably give it to my son someday- especially if (WHEN-I hope) he decides to take up hunting with traditional gear. All-in-all this was one of those days that will give me a smile for a long time to come.
Here's a photo (I hope!)

Great story and congrats! Nothing like traditions.

The quest to improve is so focused on a few design aspects & compensating for hunter ineptness as to actually have reduced a bow & arrow’s effectiveness. Nothing better demonstrates this than mech. BHs & speed fixated designs

GREAT JOB!  Congratulations.  You have to feel great with that broadhead in the story.

That is a great story!!! I did my undergrad degree at Murray State and hunted LBL enough to where I should have gotten college credit for it. Awesome place to hunt! Good luck with many more to come. Today your Pop is smiling a big smile and telling others around the camp about his son the bowhunter  :campfire:
