With my wife due on the 13th w/ our first child, I didn't plan on having much of a bowhunting season. With the Wildlife Department legalizing crossguns for archery this year, I wasn't looking forward to sharing the woods either. Regardless, I decided to go out to a piece of land where I had success in years past. I was dissapointed to find that the spring tornadoes had leveled the place. Trees were down everywere, and my creek bottom looked like a giant brush pile. I found a little pond w/ some deer tracks around it, so I hung a stand in a new place. One week later, I checked the mud and found no apparent new tracks. My trail camera on the pond confirmed my disapointment. Only one deer picture in seven days; a doe @ night. Regardless, I found myself high in that tree opening morning. As the sun came up and not a squirrel stirred, I was content just enjoying the day. Shortly after 0900 a lone doe ran around the north end of the pond, sixty yards away and well out of recurve range. Content to have just seen a deer, I was shocked when I noticed a second doe to my left. A short time later she was six yards from the base of the tree on her way to the pond. I did not even give her a chance to drink, for with the help of my Black Widow my Grizzly Stick met her behind the shoulder and brought her to the earth 50 yards later. Unexpected and appreciated. Now I can focuss all of my attention on my daughter in less than a week! Good luck to all this fall. - Timothy
