Whistling arrows
« on: October 08, 2010, 10:15:00 PM »
My Red Wing Hunter is dead quiet but those short limbs fling the arrows so fast that they whistle or hiss. Why are the arrows so noisy? If I take a shot, they won't jump the string but they might jump the arrow. They are Easton Camo light 2016 with a 125 3 blade head and 5.5 inch 3 fletch feathers. They don't make as much noise out of my other bows.

How do you quiet down an arrow?

Thanks

Do they whistle with field points or just with broadheads?

It might be the broadhead and not the arrow.
I had a really good group going... until I shot the second arrow.

My best bows are the ones someone else didn't want.

Field points. I only shot the broadheads a few times to test them out before I sharpened them and I don't remember the noise with them. I can try one again tomorrow. But field points for sure. Could it be when the points get loose?

Could be the shape of feather and the hight.Had the same problem with 5"Shield cut feathers , went to 4" shield now dead quiet.I also hear parabolic cut feathers are quieter.

If they are 5.5" high parabolic they are just like mine that I fletched up last week and you can hear the feathers all the way down. mine are really high with a hard right helical and they are very loud!! Im gonna strip them and refletch because I know these old slickheads around here will duck em!!

I think I'll try that too. Mine are full 5.5 feathers and I just had a doe duck mine this AM. Perfect shot too but she ducked under it and off she went. I have a feeling that the whole season will be like that unless I trim them. The broadheads are quieter btw. Still noisy however.

Thanks guys

I just had some 4" feathers put on my 2018's and I noticed the difference. I have 5" on my GT 5575's and a little louder. I will say the 2018's weigh in at 565 grains with 4" feathers vs 535 grains with 5" feathers on my GT 5575's. The heavier arrow with the 4" feathers may be the difference.

Do you think the noise is from the feathers?

This may sound weird but put a little Vaseline on your broadhead and see if that helps. And cut the rear tip off on an angle 1/4 inch the high back fletching and see if that helps.

LOL mamba.
I have vaseline on the broadhed. So cut the rear tip off the fletch to make it like a banana or parabolic fletch?

Makes sense. thanks

None of my 5.5 shields make a whistle,But I did burn my own traditional style that were higher in the back and they whistled.I just took the corner of the back of so what I cut off looked like a small triangle.that lowers the tail end,it should help

OK Trimmed the trailing tips off the 5.5 shields and they still whistle. About the same. I also reduced the feather on another shaft and still whistles. Wondering if it's just the feather? I'm going to fletch one of these shafts with a different feather and see if it still whistles.

How smooth is the transition from the shaft to the feather? If it's an abrupt bump, it'll make noise.  Try to create a smooth transition with some fletchtite.

It was not to smooth looper. I sanded it and used fletchtite to make it smooth. I guess it can be better.

Did smoothing the transition make a difference?

I chop my own 4.750" shield feathers, didn't notice any whistle or sizzle with factory feathers, but when I fletched some with wild turkey feathers I got sizzling goin on. I don't know why natural wild feathers would make that much difference, if anything you would think they would be better?

depends on the bow and speed (at least that's what I think) I have a longbow that will shoot a modified low profile banana but if I shoot it from a Predator recurve she's loud - these are 4 7/8". I can shoot a 5" parabolic from recurve - and 4" 4 fletch - lower profile=less noise. I have also shot high back banana and they sound like a helicopter.
