strap-on recommendations....
« on: October 13, 2010, 01:58:00 AM »
I'm talking about steps only here. Not tree stands, not shoes, and definitely not, well you know. I've got a Treesuit treestand coming and was thinking about getting a few strap on steps.  Any recommendations?

Whoa! You had me worried there for a second.

I guess the Lone Wolf Tree Sticks would probably be one of the best, but they are pretty pricey. I've used Gorilla Sticks. They work well and are much cheaper, but they are heavier if weight is a consideration.

If you don't mind a bit more weight, ladder sticks are more stable and quieter since they are less prone to shifting than the separate sticks. I don't move my stands around that much, so they work fine for me. If you want to be mobile and stay light, I'd say bite the bullet and go for the Lone Wolf sticks.

Glad you cleared that up,I couldnt imagine the pics that would have been posted.      :saywhat:    I have tried many types  but I always feel that as you get higher they add to the possibility of causing an accident. I still use screw in 's over six feet, and I found some steps that you screw in a 1/2x 3" inch bolt and leave it in the tree and then you can hang the steps on the bolts. Then you can set up a few trees and just hook them on and climb.

If you are hunting on public ground, then I can understand your need for "Strap Ons"
Missouri public ground has standing rules that no trees can be damaged by screw in steps or nails in trees, it all must be strap on variety. There have been a few screw in bow holders on some trees here and there though.   ;)

But if not, I would seriously consider the ladder sticks, climbing sticks, or something of that nature. Too many accidents have occured from using strap on steps.....just my humble opinion and I don't wanna see ya get kilt.

I really like the Ameristep strap on steps.  You can get them on *bay pretty cheap.  They are light and you can put them on a crooked tree with alot of limbs or a pine it don't matter.

I use Lone Wolf they work no matter how crooked the tree is and to me a little bit easier than screw in and some leases and land owner frown on screw ins.

Best strap on step in my opinion is Cranford. Ive used Ameristep and talk about dangerous. The Cranford use that rope with the auto tighten thing, which is nice but time consuming to put up/take down. I just recently bought LoneWolf sticks and they are very fast and secure. Your putting up 3 steps in the time it takes you to put up 1 strap on step. Buy 4 of them and bunch them together and fashion a sling to wear it over your shoulder like a back quiver.

Whew! Thought we had somebody trying to get into politics or work as a freak in a Genitorturer's concert   ;)

I cast my vote for sticks, not steps. Gave up on rope on steps yrs ago. What a mess.

Sticks or EZY screw ins for me.

I use sticks for semi-permanent sites but have used ezy folding rope-on steps for years where tree "damage" is not allowed by land owner. 6 steps and safety harness in a fanny pack and my loc-on windwalker since the early '80s. Just my opinion!

Rapid Rails! Wayne Prejeans built them under the Non-typical name and licensed Ameristep to make them and his stands...

They're nesting ladders...3 or 4 that go on easy, stable as the ground and give a boxed foot.

There was a time when Wayne was offering a small platform that locked onto one of the rail rungs.

That would be sweet for your set up.

you caught me.  I agree with the Lone Wolf "Strap on" recommendations.  Wear gloves as the steps bite!

Another vote for the Rapid Rails. I have used everything over the years---screw in steps, strap on steps, climbing stick ladders, climbing stand, Lone wolf sticks and the rapid Rails get my vote for the easiest and best. I really like the foot room on the steps

I've used a variety of screw-ins and hang-ons, but haven't looked back since I discovered Lone Wolf sticks.  Safe, solid, quiet, easy to hang... well worth the investment!
