Bad news
« on: October 15, 2010, 12:37:00 PM »
I was working on my Jeep this week and felt something pop in my right hand and wrist.  Couldn't pull my bow without severe pain. Saw the chiropractor this morning and I have a torn ligament in my wrist.  Also displaced some bones in my hand that he was able to adjust.  So, now I have to rest and ice for at least a couple of weeks.  Our season has been open but I've had no shots.  Hopefully I can get back at it for November.  Any advice you might have for me would be appreciated.

I did, he said he wasn't sure what it was, but ice and nsaids.  I don't use pain killers, so his advice wasn't worth any more than my chiropractor, in fact less since I didn't get any answers from him.

Go see a physiotherapist, and or an osteopath, they do great for me and my back. The physiotherapist can give you some exercises so you don't get worst and you keep some strenght in you hand!!
Good luck and hope you get better fast!
Cheers

Alternate hot and cold and lay off the shooting for a week or two. Exercise the hand with a rubber ball. You might also consider working out with a low poundage bow or one of the exercise pieces on the market which simulate the push pull motion of an archer. Most are made with surgical tubing. Listen to your body. If it hurts, quit. If your lucky you could make it back before the season is over. If you try to force the issue, you could develop major problems and be out much longer. Good luck.

Advice? ....... buy a Chevrolet next time    :D .    Just KIDDING!!!

But seriously........ don't take the pain killers for the pain relief, take Mortrin to relieve any swelling issues.

Tore ligaments in my left ankle, 25 yrs ago, it can still be a bother, but they healed and there hasn't been sign of arthritis, their big concern. They wrapped, and I iced it 20 min. on and 20 min. off for weeks.

If your concerned about the advice, ask for a referral for rehab. They need to heal before you start using it again.

What Bill said!!  I tore ligments to my right ring finger 4 years ago-less than week before the season.  The physical therapist I saw said cold for as long as you can stand it, then very warm for an equal amount of time.  Alternate back and forth.  I had to learn to shoot 2 fingered for the rest of the season, with a lower poundage bow.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the advice.  I hate to miss the rest of the season, but that would be better than messing it up even worse.

I may regret this post, but how about a ligthweight compound with sights and a wrist strap release? If you could borrow such a rig, and break it over without pain, you could be grouping good enough to hunt within a week or two. I only say this because you're already an archer and a bowhunter.

Yep,and then if you do manage to make a killing shot on a deer then what? Drag him out with your good arm so it will be hurting as much as the other one...... Not me,take some time and let it heal. Catch up on some reading or get some scouting in so that when you are healed up you will know where to head. Let it heal, you will be glad you did.
